I would check the alignment of the pipes first. Then put it back together and test it. It may be they just put the nut on wrong and it wouldn't seal. When I looked under my shower I found that a supporting block was too think and put a strain on the joints.

That could be a possibility. I would try to reach in and get the nut loose that attaches to the shower pan, which will give some flexibility to the trap nut. Once you know you have the trap aligned and the nut threads correctly and tightened, then go back and retighten the nut on the shower pan strainer.

Since it's not a pressure line you could try some leak sealing tape. Should be available at Lowes or HD.

How would I apply it? Around the threads?

No, you wrap it around the nut and the the pipe on the outside. It stretches and sticks to itself.

Not sure I would do that, he would never be able to take it back apart without destroying the fitting.

I would try wrapping the joint and threads with some teflon tape before screwing the nut on. Since it's not a pressure line, that might just seal the leaking joint.

The tape can be cut off. He already had pipe dope on the thread and it still leaked.

if the collar is on the top pipe it goes left to right to loosen. If it is on the bottom and and screws on the top piece it's right to left

There shouldn’t be a rubber gasket, it should be a wedge flange that creates the seal as you tighten it.

Thank you again all for the help!
Oh and just an FYI......I'm female

I have been solo camping since my kids grew up and I almost always fix all my own issues/breaks/problems, with a little help from the forums.
I have learned soooo much over the years that I can actually give some advice once in a while.

Anyway, carry on....happy trails!

definitely was not winterized properly> You want to be sure your running antifreeze through lines and in the end dump extra in your p traps. From the photo it froze and blew out the p trap> Go to local hardware and get a replacement.
