Digital Thermostat Change Out

I am looking for the link to the thread that discussed the swap out of the standard thermostat with a digital model.

I think there was even a link to where to purchase it online. (~$60)

I tried doing a search on this board, but could not find it.

If anyone has the make and model of the digital thermostat, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Rob

I changed to the Coleman digital thermostat last summer. You just have to color match the new wires to the old installation. I did have to strip some wires and then used wire nuts for the connections. We are happy with the change.

I swapped mine out last summer with the Coleman Digital Heat/Cool Thermostat (u) 8330-3362. It was very easy and it matched wire for wire. It only took me about 15 mintues to swap it out. This unit also allows you to use both the high and low fan settings.

I just went to the local home center and bought a simple digital thermostat, I think it cost me about $20. The hardest part of the installation for me was, Jayco did not leave any extra wire. I think there was only about an inch of wire sticking out of the wall and I could not tug on it to get any more.

I ordered one online and swapped it out. Easy job. I don't care for the household ones that need a internal battery.

One less battery to replace.

Got mine at Amazon for $59.99 free shipping, white or black. Try Tweetys first as they sponsor this Forum. I wasn't aware of that when I bought mine.

No you can use any type. I got mine from home depot. It uses batteries and works great. I don't know about the wifi one. But it should work!

Never used a WIFI thermostat, I would have to make the assumption they will need an extra wire connected to a power source, to power the antenna that is always on. Depending on your trailer this might mean you need to run another pair of wires to the thermostat location. The next item I foresee as an issue is, it is designed for a home application. All home low voltage thermostat controls systems that I have seen utilize a 24VAC controls. This might mean in order for the WIFI to work you might need to add a transformer (110VAC to 24VAC). That means you will need to be hooked up to shore power to run your furnace/AC. The next item I see as a potential issue is you need to have a WIFI hotspot for it to connect to. This would be fine if you are parked at home in the driveway, or if you have a seasonal site with WIFI. I think a lot more research is required.

I too replaced my old OEM analog thermostat with a standard programmable digital thermostat; being it is powered off a couple of AA batteries I did not have any power supply issues.

Please keep us informed if you find a way to make it work.

Thanks guys. I still have some more research to do. I would assume this one would need a direct power source. We keep our camper at a permanent spot year round and have wifi. The electricity is always on so I’m not concerned with it working off the battery. I guess the next thing to look into is the power source issue.

Reading more into this on Amazon reviews you need a C wire which is a power source. If you do not have a power source you can buy a plug for it. So now i need to get to my camper to see if there is an outlet around and what kind and colors of wires are already there.

I went with the Home Depot Honeywell digital for about 20 bucks. I don't need or want WiFi in my thermostat.
Very easy swap out.

Hey Skymutt...Flymutt here . I have a question for you on the thermostat you installed. Did it have a setting for the furnace fan only (no heat)? I'm looking for this so I can run my electric heater while leaving the furnace fan on in order to keep the under belly warm. The "fan only" setting on my thermostat only runs the AC fan.
Thanks

Hi Fly Mutt (like the name). The $21 dollar one I installed just had the AC fan. I was just looking for a simple installation that improved the poor quality "analog" one that came with the fiver.

I have the Coleman digital and the heat fan will not work with the fan ON switch only. I tried it with the switch set to heat and the thermostat setting low enough that the heat would not come on. Switched the fan switch to ON and nothing happened.

The WIFI Honeywell worked like a charm! Now i can set the temp before heading up to the camper in the hot summer to cool it off after a long ride up! I just had to add a power adaptor to the "C" and "RC".
