Dish Wally Receiver DVR Hard Drive
Howdy,
I am outfitting our rig w/ a Dish Wally receiver and want to attach an external hard drive (EHD) for a DVR. There is a lot of conflicting info on the web as to whether an EHD attached to a Wally needs its own external power source (plugged into the wall outlet in my case) or can simply use the power coming through the USB cable coming from the Wally. The external power source requirement is not currently on the Dish web site so I wonder if that requirement has been done away with w/ newer models of the Wally. For those who have installed this setup fairly recently, what EHD did you use and does it simply use the power coming through the USB cable or does it use external power for the EHD.
Thanks,
Mike

While I don't have the Dish Wally, I can tell you that the power supply for any EHD is specific to the hard drive. The larger drives require more power than the USB's are rated for and those hard drives will have a power supply included in the purchase, the smaller less power needed drives will not need an external power supply and will not have one included in the box. So the answer is that the need for a power supply for an EHD is based on the EHD you choose, larger ones need an external power supply and smaller drives do not. I hope this helps. (:>) ~CA

Dish sells a relatively small external HDD that does run off the USB power but when I swapped my own 1 TB external (Non Solid State) drive it wouldn't spin up without the external power supply.

When I clicked on your link it showed $109 as you stated, then I clicked to see what the 4tb cost which is $89 and then the price for the one you purchased showed me that it is now on sale for $59. I may get one as well. It also stated in the FAQ that it doesn't need an external power supply. ~CA

Good deal. They took the one I bought off sale and put the bigger one on sale.

Question.....does it work ok?
Did Dish charge you a $40 fee to activate dvr function?
I'm looking at this one on Amazon, should work right?

UPDATE:
I bought the 1T drive for $47, works great!!
So far have not been charged, maybe it will show up on monthly bill?
The receiver reboots faster and the guide is updated right away, before I had to manually update it.
So far really happy with this addition!!

Spower, the external HD should not have anything to do with the receiver booting up or the guide. I'm puzzled

Circling back. This HD has worked fine for us and our Dish Wally receiver the past month. I was charged $40 for activating it, which is a one-time fee.

I lucked into a mis-marked Wally plus EHD for 100. The EHD run off of the Wally, works great. The only problem I have is not being able to record one program while watching a different channel. I want to try to download programs from our Hopper 3 to the EHD, supposed to work, anyone tried that?
