Electric Cooler
Does anyone own one or has anyone owned one of these electric coolers? http://www.amazon.com/Igloo-Chill-Co...d_sim_sbs_sg_1
Do they work well. We're thinking of putting it on our Christmas list 
We'd want to keep it plugged in the outside receptacle when camping. Seems practical no?

I have thought about getting one of those as well. It seems practical and would save money since you would not have to buy ice cubes for a regular cooler.
I can not give any advise on how well they work because I don't own one and I don't know anyone who does. Sorry 
If you do get one, please report back as to how good or bad they are. I would be interested.

We have had one for years, i believe ours is a coleman brand (could be wrong), it is stored right now. We use it on road trips and it works really well. Ours can also be used as a warmer by reversing the plug where it plugs into the cooler. No need for ice....

We have two, a Coleman and an Igloo.. both work fantastic. We actually are on a week long trip starting today and had to bring extra supplies to our trailer which we leave in storage at a CG about an hour away. Food always arrives at the destination well chilled. Nice to not have to buy ice as said above but what really is great is you get to use the full volume of the cooler. Ice takes up loads of room and makes everything wet and messy. You'll never go back to ice chest again.

IF it is hot out, one thing to know is that the electric coolers lower the air temperature "X" degrees (I have one and cools 40 degrees) from the actual air temperature. If it is 90 degrees the cooler will only cool to 50 degrees. Food will spoil at that temperature.

I have a Coleman version of the cooler here's what I like. First you can stand it up to work as a refrigerator opening and closing the door just like one. I installed a 12V outlet in the bed of my pickup and can plug the cooler in the bed cooling while traveling, very handy. You do not need ice, but you can put a bag on the bottom to help on the warmer days (see above post). I do not store food in mine, just beverages and like it a lot. On the down side, when I bought mine it didn't have an A/C adapter. I had to buy a 12V converter which ran me $50 (but it works excellent).
I do still use traditional coolers when I want my beer COLD, but can't beat the convenience of this one especially when traveling.

My electric cooler says not to put ice in the cooler. I don't know why.

Mine may as well and I can understand when sitting horizontal (water entering the cooling area) but when vertical, I see no reason not to add a bag if need be. And I used my cooler this evening when going to the fireworks, worked great!

I have a mini (arm rest size) for in my truck.. had it for years works well. Mine also can be used as a warmer which is nice for taking hot sandwiches to a picnic...

We had one of these 12V coolers several years ago, and while it worked fairly well, we did not think about the amount of current required, and plugged it into the cigar lighter in the car. During one trip that was rather hot, it apparently pulled too much current, and shorted out the unit. Cooler never worked again, and there was damage to the car electrical system as well. We should have known that it was designed for an accessory power plug, and NOT the cigar lighter.

I installed a 12V outlet in the bed of my truck and am drawing the power from the camper charge line. It will only operate when the truck is running (which I like and don't like) so it's really only used on long trips. When I get to the CG, I have a 12V power supply similar to this one which provides more than enough power to run the cooler. You are right though, it does draw a lot of amps.
