Exhaust Brakes

We are towing with a 2005 GMC Duramax. So far the modifications are: 4" Magniflow exhaust, Banks Air Intake and Firestone Ride Rite Air Springs. The next one might be an exhaust brake. Wondering if anyone else has input on the Banks System that uses the vanes in the Turbo to create the braking action. The prices are similar to the other system on the exhaust side. Is one better than the other?

Thanks clutch. I had a look at the Diesel Place. Lots of different opinions. I found out that GM is using a turbo exhaust system in the 2011. Now if I can find out if it has any similarity to the Banks set up.

My Dodge has the turbo exhaust brake and it works really good. I think you may find a BD or Jacobs brake a lot cheaper than buying a new turbo. The vanes reverse with the turbo brake and I don't think you can modify the turbo to do it.

I found out that the 2011 GM Duramax uses the Turbo type of exhaust brake, so I have been checkin out any after market systems that are similar. It would be nice to know who's technology GM has used.
As for the exhaust restrictive type the price isn't that different from the Turbo type. It is the addition of the controller that drives up the price. I am looking hard at the Banks Speed Brake with the Banks IQ. The IQ has other features that are attractive. It is also plug and play, no mechanical intervention for installation.

DMRGMC if you put the duramax into tow haul mode you have a transmission brake... works just like a exhaust brake.. hit the brake to engage it and let it work for you...

To my knowledge it works on the exact same principle, it changes the turbo veins and locks the torque convertor. My oem exhaust brake will almost stop me without even touching the service brakes.

I use Tow/Haul whenever I am towing the 5er. I just wanted to have an exhaust brake to supplement. The transmission brake doesn't help to slow it down as effectively on longer steep grades. The more you touch the brakes the transmission shifts down and the rpm goes closer to the red zone. The Banks system allows you to adjust the settings.

The system you have in the 2011 is exactly that. From all reports (other owners) it works well with the transmission brake, there is no extra noise and they can't really tell it is working except for the braking action. With the Banks Speed Brake and the Banks IQ it is fully adjustable and the IQ has other features that will be handy.
