Fireplace Mantel

Anybody know how the fireplace mantel is constructed and attached to the fireplace surround? Went to install a couple of 12V accent lights and drilled a pilot hole only to find that it appears to be solid. Not sure if it actually is, or if I just got lucky and hit a support. Thankfully the hole is small, and underneath so it's not visible, but I obviously don't want to be drilling more holes, and the material is too thick for a stud finder to work.

If there is a tv above it pull the strap below and swing it out then you should be able to feel behind it where the supports are if it is like mine
