Ford F 150 with no hot wire to TT?

My neighbor just bought a new TV to pull behind 2016 4wd 150 Ford. There is no juice going back to run the camper on or charge the TT. No blown fuse in Tt or PU. Remember reading some where of this problem in a Ford and a fuse was missing. Checked manual and can not find where it calls for a trailer or hot wire fuse. Any ideas?

Look at the fuse block diagram of the Ford 150 and it will say where the fuse is located, if it is missing then install.

I believe that the modern Fords no longer require that added fuse or relay to allow the charge circuit to work. I'm not sure what year it changed however.

You may be able to call a Ford dealer on the west coast.

Owners manuals can provide a lot of info on topics of this nature.

How are you testing the circuit to determine that it isn't charging? From what I've read on the Ford truck forums, the truck needs to recognize a trailer before it energizes that charge circuit.

My 2018 needed nothing done to work out of the box. I would assume the 2016 would be the same if similarly equipped.

Won't run camper and no juice with volt meter. Was hooked to TT for several hours so it should have sensed it if it was going to

Was the tow vehicle engine running? My Ford is different year etc., but there is a solenoid on mine that only passes 12v power to the trailer with the engine running.

Do any of the exterior lights work, brake, running lights. The charge circuit is very low amperage and doesn't do a great job charging the battery, is the battery dead did you put the meter on it

Tow engine was not running but will try in the AM
All exterior lights fine but will not run interiors. Checked hot wire in plug but no juice.

The ignition has to be on for the charge wire to energize. Also, is the trailer status screen appearing on the dash display?

Also, does the truck have an integrated or aftermarket brake controller? Does it turn on when the truck is plugged in to the trailer?

Assuming the '16 is the same as my '18, there should be a Trailer Status screen that appears in the EVIC between the tach and speedometer that will show brake status etc. If it isn't there when plugging the trailer in, push OK on the left side set of steering wheel buttons and toggle down to the trailer status screen and see if it is showing a trailer connected. If it doesn't see one there, it will say "No trailer connected" when you try to access that tab.

On the newer fords the charge circuit does NOT energize until:
Trailer connected with trailer brakes
Truck engine running
Truck in drive.
You can leave truck running and put in park
You should see an increase in the voltage at the trailer battery then.
So volt test battery without truck running
Say you have 12. 2 volts
After the above process it should read higher with truck running 7pin connected
Shifted out of park into drive and back into park.
Thats how a buddys worked.

Try testing it with the truck running and also please confirm that the trailer battery/batteries are in good working order and that the brake controller is activating. We can go from there.

Side question. Do the 12v accessories work on the trailer independent of the truck off of the trailer battery? Could this be something as simple as a blown 30a fuse between the trailer battery and the trailer?

Also, have you tried hooking the trailer up to your truck to see if it works with yours?

You cannot run off the truck battery or charging system. The wire used for charging the trailer battery in the truck harness is to hold the charge on a good working trailer battery. The idea is you need a charged good battery on the trailer so if the trailer comes unhitched the emergency brake cable engages the electric brakes. Bad or dead battery on trailer and no brakes if it comes unhitched. The substane charge from truck is to keep that trailer battery fully charged. There are a number of things on trailer running off the trailer battery when driving down the road.
Brakes is number 1
CO/Propane detector
If fridge is on propane the control board is running on 12volts from trailer battery. Control board is used by the fridge propane igniter.
12volt lights inside trailer.
Legally you are required to have a good charged battery on your trailer. If you have a good charged trailer battery it should handle the load from the items in trailer for a days drive.

Hope this helps on the why you cannot run on a bad or dead trailer battery or strictly off the truck. For the truck substane circuit they made it with smarts so the truck was not energizing it when no trailer brakes are detected. Some older vehicles where live on that wire 24/7 or when ignition was on and would get dirt and corrosion in the 7pin plug or plug damaged in snow etc. and kill the truck battery. The smarts solve that issue somewhat
