Furnace exhaust location behind water hose.

I figured I’m not the first to encounter this, but my forum search turned up no results. This weekend was the first time we’ve used the furnace on our 2020 SLX8. When I hooked up, it dawned on me that the water connection is just above the furnace exhaust. My temporary solution was to tie the hose up out of the way until a more permanent solution was found as it was late and I was ready for bed. In the 2-3 minutes it took me to go find some paracord, the furnace kicked on and melted my water filter and the end of my hose. After replacing my hose, I spent the weekend with the water hose tied up to the power connector. Have you encountered this and what’s the most practical solution? Seems like a really dumb design flaw unless I’m missing something...

Design flaw. At least when connected to city water, you have integrated fire suppression. I cannot belive it passed any design review.

Personally it needs to be reported to the feds for a recall. I'm sure someone will post the link

Wow!, that is a design flaw... I'd send a message to Jayco..... maybe they'll correct it for future models.... maybe reimburse you for a new hose and filter.

for a fix..... get you a brass 90 degree fitting and if you can solder.... build you a long "coupler" with fittings on each end (1 female hose fitting, 1 male hose fitting) that drops below your camper 6" to a foot.... use this when cold camping (needing furnace)... bonus would be it would keep the water heated at that location.

And i’ll bet the the design engineers are laughing their ass off over that one.

When I hooked it up and noticed it, I literally said as I walked off to get the rope to tie it up, “well at least my water line won’t freeze”.

You could try a fitting like this to swing the hose and filter out of the way.

A fitting like these might work.

Attach the filter to the water supply, not the trailer. Same performance without the problem. Far less frustrating than trying to change the world with recalls and phone calls.

Just as bad as having the electric inlet right below water inlet.

That is really a design flaw!

My brother's last TT (2008 Forest River) had the furnace exhaust 11 inches to the right of the entrance door. He had to be careful not to fire up the furnace and leave the door open at the same time.

So you think the hot exhaust that melted my water filter won’t melt the hose?? Switching the location of the filter in no way whatsoever helps to solve this problem.

It’s a problem that is relatively easy to work around and definitely not worth the trip to the dealer and the down time. The point is more that it’s a dumb design. As I like to say in situations like this “it’s a brilliant solution to a problem that never should have existed in the first place”.

I actually borrowed one of these from a neighbor. It gets it started in a direction away from the exhaust so that it’s easier to tie the hose out of the way, but still doesn’t solve the problem.

Wow! Maybe NHTSA needs to be notified for a recall?

I'd look inside where you can see the back side of the water inlet, and see if a new one could be mounted either side of that one, at a safe distance. If that was possible, I'd either just cap the old one off and leave it there, or remove it, and mount a light in its place. Just thinking out loud.

We noticed right away that our furnace exhaust outlet was covered by a hatch door if left open. Jayco’s solution was to provide no latch to prop in open.
I installed one that allows the door to be propped open and hold the door far enough out to keep the exhaust from melting the door.
It has worked great for 10 years. I only need it while setting up or leaving.

Filter at the campground faucet and 2 90 degree brass fittings. Done.

Jayco doesn’t even want me to send them pictures. They want them sent from the dealer. Like I said, there’s a lot of brilliant solutions to a problem that never should have existed in the first place, many of which don’t require a trip to the dealer. I know it’s solvable, it’s just incredibly dumb.

I see the lawsuit coming on some newby without a clue! Hopefully there won't be any personal injuries!

I haven’t read about any other instances of this problem. Maybe mine was one of those Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend builds and someone just stuck this one in the wrong spot.

I really like JFlightrisks solution, depending on what is on the inside behind the outer wall. The idea of a “hose hook up light” is pretty cool. Jay.
