Garmin RV 660 LMT question
Anyone here use or have used this particular model? If so, what are your likes and dislikes.
There is a very good price for one on Amazon right now, but rummaging about the internet, I've seen some pretty mixed reviews/comments on this particular unit.
Just trying to get some feedback from you guys.

We've had an RV660LMT for over two years. It works well, but like all GPS's is not perfect. It is vastly superior to a Tom-Tom I once had.
1) The screen is big enough, but not too big, and is bright and clear.
2) It will almost always make a route that will get you from point A to point B. Many times I have to modify the route to make it good for us. This is not difficult to do. The GPS seems to prefer Interstate highways. Sometimes I want to take the scenic route.
3) It has many POI's (Points of Interest) it its memory. This helps a lot when you want to go to the museum or the cave or Walmart, but don't know exactly where it is. You can search for those POI's near you, and the GPS will make a route to get there.
4) It has a display of your current speed, which I believe is very accurate. It will flash red if you are exceeding the speed limit. But caution, sometimes the limit is actually 35, and the machine thinks it's 45. Oops.
5) The GPS makes routes based on the criteria you have entered - height, length, weight of your setup.
6) Sometimes, it seems like the GPS loses its mind. The route is nonsense, it takes you miles out of the way. Usually, it seems like this happens when its map does not agree with reality on the ground. You gotta pay attention.
7) It is more of a help than a problem.

I HAVE THE 760LMT going on 4 years now and love it.
The 760 LMT is very similar to the 660 LMT.
Like RVHIKER stated above you do have to preview the routes to make sure it is what you are looking for and not planning the round-a-about tour. and it is a great help. I wouldn't be without it.
Below is the comparison.

I've been using the RV660LMT since March. So far no complaints at all. I really like the way it will give you a "heads up" when there is an upcoming school zone or speed limit change. It will also let me know if there are delays on my route and offer my alternatives.
Very happy with it!

I have the 660, and found it easy to use. As others have said, these things are not infallible. I've had Tom Tom , Magellan and now the Garmin, which has been the easiest to use for me.

We’re on our fifth season with the RV760LMT and couldn’t be happier. The only time I’ve had an issue with routing was user error.
I use Garmin Base Camp for trip planning and have been happy with it too, and it’s a lot easier to adjust routes if necessary on that than it is the unit itself.
The one complaint I do have is that it can be challenging to figure out how Garmin has named roads (route, trip, rate, etc). I haven’t been able to find any consistency.

Garmin
RVHIKER is accurate- we love the RV760 with the 7” screen - old eyes like the large screen Les

We're in our 4th season using the RV 660 LMT and it's been a great choice. I like the voice recognition so I can operate it hands-free. Likes others I use the Base Camp software to pre-plan my route and transfer it to the unit when needed. While not infallible, the vast majority of the time it provides sane and reasonable routing. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this model again.

+1
Great GPS, head and shoulders over TomTom or Magellan.
Tie it to the app on your phone for weather and traffic alerts.

I agree with what others have said and would add a couple of things. I like how you can see the elevation of your route, though it is not always accurate. Sometimes it thought the road went over the hill not around it. It is also convenient to use the up ahead feature. You can see categories such as gas or restaurants and can search along the route for something in particular, pilots for example. Just remember that you are in charge and do not have to do what it tells you to.

Mine goes rogue every now and then. You can be running down the interstate and then the unit will place you off the road and try to get you back to the road you were already driving on. This isn’t really an issue when far out away from any towns. The issue surfaced while in Philadelphia and kept trying to reroute us.

Drive my wife nuts when they are not cosisitent. Sometimes it's a hwy #, others its a street name. Then a mile away back to the hwy #. Otherwise, we like the RV760LMT.
Free updates are a money saver.

Drives me nuts, too. I don't like it that highway names (like Route 60) are often named by a local name, like Elm Street. When I'm in a town looking for Route 60, I need to know I'm looking for Route 60. It has big signs saying Route 60. The signs for Elm Street at a lot harder to find.

I have noticed a good many map errors and have tried to report and have them corrected. I just gave up as the procedure is very time consuming and confusing.

Thanks all. I may pull the trigger on a new RV 660 LMT model from Amazon which is selling for $210 right now.
My current Nuvi 880, which is very old by GPS standards, no longer has enough internal storage available to download the entire NA maps. In fact, junction view has disappeared now.
I do know to not rely 100% on any GPS system. Like President Regan, I will "trust, but verify".

Worst thing about the 660 I have found so far is when in RV mode it wont recognize certain roads.. eg the Icefield Highway from Lake Louise Alberta to Jasper. 1000's of RV's drive this road every day but for some reason Garmin does not think you should take an RV on it.

I ran into a similar issue a couple of years ago when we were in the Lake Mead area. The 660 absolutely refused to route me on the highway that went to the campground when it was in "RV" mode. When I switched it to "Automobile" mode no complaints. There clearly are some rather arbitrary rules embedded somewhere. It's not perfect, but for the $$ I spent I've been pretty happy with the unit overall.

Reliable smart navigation is not included with the RV 660 LMT based on our experience with it. We have at times been puzzled and frustrated by the routing this thing generates which is why we also have Google maps routing active on one of our phones to alert us when the RV 660 is giving us dumb routing instructions. Otherwise we are happy with it.

As a long time Garmin user I have only one main issue with the 660 in addition to the cautions others have stated. The 'Truck' routing used in lieu of and actual RV route can really take you on a round about trip at times, as trucks are banned from many roads that RV's can easily travel. Normally in large built up areas I switch to Auto mode to avoid this as I drive a 27' class A with a really tight turning radius. An example is the left turn to the state CG in Greyeagle in the Sierras, in auto mode it makes the left in town onto the nice wide 2 lane directly to the CG, in RV mode it takes you thru town to hwy 70, then left for 2 miles, then left again for 1.5 miles and back to the same road you would have been on had you turned left in town. All of this due to a school and a fire station on the preferred route. So by all means check the route before following it. I really do like the 'sharp curve ahead' notification, as well as steep downgrade warning.
