Goin’ Baja! DIY

I decided to covert the SLX to a Baja model. The changeover will be complete w/4-leaf springs, 15” wheels, foldaway entry steps-2. ...maybe Baja stickers

Items are purchased online so a very inexpensive project.

I’ll post pics of items and progress.

Dexstar steel rims and Free Country tires (205/75R15 8PR/Load Range D w/Scuff Guard)

Milatk 4-leaf double-eye springs (25-1/4”)

Excellent project.

I also applied eternabond around the vent stacks. 2 larger pieces to wrap around. Then a series of small triangles to wrap around and up the stack. No more worries there now.

Please do post as you go.

Did you remove the factory sealant/putty/junk?? If so how hard.
How much and which width tape did you buy, I want an extra few feet for emergency, low limb while camping repairs.

I removed only the sealant that was failing...pinholes that increased to the size of a pencil eraser then properly cleaned and filled w/Dicor. In addition (not to waste a tube), I applied it to existing seams. According to a Dicor tech, it’s best to allow gases to escape (2 weeks) prior to covering w/Eternabond tape. I purchased a 3”-50ft. roll and used 1/2 of it.

Nice work! I just resealed all my roof seams with Dicor as well on the 5er and once it settles in the next few weeks of sunshine I’m going ahead with the Eternabond on straight seams. I did it to the smaller camper years ago and I’ve never regretted it.

It's easy to remove if you want to do it that way. Not necessary, but I like the flatter surface it provided.

Just scrape it off with a plastic putty knife, about 1.5" wide. Removal was easy on my new Jayco, and was almost as easy on my friend's 30+ year old motorhome. I'd say the entire roof of my 26BH took under an hour.

I used the 4" tape everywhere, although some like to use the 6" wide across the front seam.

I did not scrap. I purchase a 6" x 50' roll. Had some left over. I did everything but the gutters. Frig vent, sewer vents, skylight, roof vent, front cap seam, radio antenna mount. Maybe a few other items.

Well worth it.

Where'd you source the "Baja" decals? My 2015 185RB is missing the decal on the driver's side. Weird.

That butyl tape looks wicked permanent. I'm considering doing it for my trailer to protect the Dicor. Are there tradeoffs/difficulties when it comes time to take the tape off to do repairs or to re-rubberize the roof?

I’m not an expert on EternaBond tape but it sticks to my TPO roof and has a life expectancy of 18-35 years. ...should be good.

Anyway got 2 Baja decals (2”x11”), Jayco’s latest design.

I haven’t yet installed the foldaway 2 steps. The stock 184BH has acceptable clearance but I wanted to raise it, the sewer dump pipe for off-road. A few pics; country setting for the Jayco, in tow “before” the Baja kit and added clearance after kit and 15” wheels. ...will post an after pic of entire RV. Thnx for the interest!

Nice work. How much did this effort lift the trailer? How does it affect towing? Why new leaf springs? And did you require any changes to your WDH?

The conversion raised the Jayco about 6”. As for towing, some heavy stirring at first because the new height shifted trailer weight to the TV. So I bought the correct ball mount to level both vehicles.

New leaf springs because the Baja suspension has 4 leafs (stock is 3) and the old springs began to sag (though low vehicle mileage).

I don’t have a WDH. The 184BH weighs half that of the Xterra, ride is fine.
