How many water filters do you use?

Hello all, we are a new camping family and we just bought a Jayco JayHawk Class C rv. I'm trying to determine what water filters I need. My question is if you are using a water filter cartridge like a WaterPur inside the rv do you still need to use an inline filter at the city water hook up?

Thanks!

Depends on where the inside one is located. Some only filter water to the kitchen sink. Our rig was like that and we just bypassed it with a short hose and used a whole house filter that filters all water coming into the rig.

It has been flawless ever since, Btw those inside filters are much more expensive.

I have a whole house filter that is factory installed and another filter between the source and my water softener. Then there is the filter in the residential fridge.

Thanks! The inside one is under the kitchen sink. I'll have to look at it and see if it just filters water to that sink or to the bathroom sink as well....hopefully it will be easy to tell.

I bypassed the one inside the RV. The most important filter is the very first filter which I use at the spigot and prior to my hose. I always let the spigot run for a short while on the ground and prior to connecting the hose in order to check the water for color, smell, and sediments, sometimes I use a clear drinking glass if I have any doubts. Often early in the season and in particular with the furthest out camp sites, the water in the pipe will not be of great quality but will clear out after running the water for a short while. ~CA

X2, you don't want sand or sediment flowing into your rv's water system.
I rarely drink water from my RV, but one park out west has RO water that is very good. It still goes through a brita pitcher before using.

So I went overboard.... I have the SoftCell water softener and filter at the park tap, then another Pure Flo filter in the wet bay, and an inline filter in the wet bay that I think feeds directly from the wet bay to the refrigerator, then the filter in the refrigerator for the fridge water....

I have gone back and forth in my thoughts on what type of filter system to use.

Always have sediment filter on the spigot. I start with the brass pressure regulator followed by the sediment filter. After the filter I have a brass “Y” with individual shutoffs. One output of the “Y” connects up to “city water” on the 5’er. The other outlet can be used for outside water or black tank flush.

I have thoughts of adding in a portable 2 stage carbon filter before the “city water” inlet on 5’er to filter out any odd tastes and chemicals. That is still in my undecided pros/cons thought process.

For now we use a 10 cup Britta Filter for cooking and drinking needs that sits on the counter. The Britta Filter water is also used to feed the portable ice maker. That seems to work out well, and it is the lowest cost solution that takes up the least amount of space. The Britta Filter rides on a towel in the sink for traveling.

I am going to add a two filter system on the inside of my RV at the point the city water enters. It will be sediment / taste - smell setup. That is set for the spring when I de-winterize.

We have one external filter for the "whole house" and a countertop reverse osmosis system for drinking and cooking.

We use one external filter. Bottled water for cooking and drinking. I’m a little gun shy of water coming from an unknown source.

We use a regular old blue filter - used to put it by the bib, now have it by the trailer inlet - can't decide which is better. We use a new filter each spring and it lasts for the camping season. Haven't been poisoned or died in the past six years. : )

Keep in mind that the more filters you had to the line the lower you pressure is likely to go. If you start out with high pressure you're probably good. If it was low to begin with it will probably get worse.

4 filters and a softener. The first filter is one of those blue tubular filters that are available almost everywhere. They are 20 micron. Next is a 2 stage filter that I purchased when we had a travel trailer that did not have any internal filtering. I put a 5 micron then a 1 micron filter in those canisters, with one of them being a cord/cotton wound filter and the other being a carbon filter. Our current 5th wheel had it's own internal canister filter, so I moved it to be the last filter in this set up. It is a 0.5 micron filter. Then I have a water softener as the last stage prior to entering into the RV plumbing.

I use 3 filters. An external campco filter at the water regulator. An internal filter under the sink, and an for drinking we run the tap water through a Zero water filter. Probably overkill, but can't be too careful with campground water.
