I have been camping for 20 years with never a problem....

I heard this statement yesterday from several campers where I am now. Yesterday morning at 4:00am we had a thunderstorm pass by. There was obviously a lightning strike very close (it did wake me up), and several RV's were damaged. I know of 2 TT's and one motorhome. All of these have no working power in their units now. The motorhome can not even use his onboard generator, so he thinks he lost his transfer switch also.

So glad I have a PT50C. Can I be sure I would have had damage without it? No, but I don't want to find out either.

Just another insurance policy you hope you never need, but damn sure glad it's there when something like that happens.

I only started using one and fortunately, haven't needed it or had problems at any CG's yet. But yeah, I'm glad I have one too!

I have been camping for 20 years with never a problem....

I have been using a surge protector for 4-5 years and camping 3 times that.
I have been known to throw the breaker if a lightning storm was coming thru.
Never had a lightning strike or surge till last month.

That surge zapped your surge protector, correct? Had you thrown that breaker before the zap?

Update: I talked with the guy with the motorhome and he had a TV Tech working on his rig all afternoon yesterday. He is back with power, but so far the identified damage:

converter, auto transfer switch, microwave, 1 television, a/c runs but sounds funny and a CPAP machine. He already bought a new CPAP for obvious reasons.

The good news is his insurance company came out same day when the TV Tech was there and wrote him a check on the spot for the known damage to date. They said to let them know what else he finds over the next few days.

All GEICO could sell us was basically a standard auto policy with very incomplete coverage, so we went with Progressive's RV insurance through Good Sam.

Their home is in Georgia so I guess Georgia and Geico get along.

You would be better off unplugging than just throwing the breaker.
