Inverter Generators

Hi all,

Been RVing for a year and have a seasonal site... this fall, we are taking it on the road for an extended snowbird trek... I was planning on picking up an inverter generator for occasional boondocking and for when campgrounds lose power. Can’t decide if it’s better to have one 3400 watt Unit or two 2000 watt units with a parallel box... seems to me the latter may be the way to go because if the Benny fails you at least have one for the bare necessities. Secondly, they are considerably easier to cart around... what are your thoughts?

Secondly, brands... I know Honda is reputedly the best but my they are expensive. How are the other brands ie Champion, Firman, Hyundai to name a few?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I bought two 2000 watt iPower inverters from Costco. They come with the parallel kit and are powered by Yamaha engines. They are quiet and have worked well for me. And they are cheaper than Honda.

We have the Honda twins, they work great for us. Like you said they are spendy. We only run one at a time when not using the A/C. Wife's medical condition makes her feel badly when she gets over heated. If I were going to buy a single unit I would look at the remote start generator. They do get a little heavy compared to the Hondas.

The Honda generators are also rebuildable. I think that is why they cost more. Most other brands are through away when they wear out or break down. Ebay has some Honda parts, and I know that a authorized Honda dealer can get almost anything you need for them.

We use 2 2000 watt Champion inverter generators for the reasons you stated. Easier to pick up and handle, only use one when AC is not needed.

They are about half the price of Hondas. We use them so seldom that I could not justify paying Honda prices.

Most name brand generators will do you a good job.

Champion uses Yamaha engines also for most models, special the smaller size.

When I was looking I was looking at the ones that they have at Habour Freight and the Champion, I guess that two will be good for easy handling if you have the space to haul two. I like the fact that if you get two and know that you will be only needed one you can bring one with you and but if you are going to use both well then carry both but either way will be good.
