Mod: Double Back Bumper

I need extra storage for sewer hoses. Was going to mount something under the TT but with the plastic "covers," too much work. I thought about mounting another bumper under the current bumper in the back and thought I could use some feedback on 3 questions:
1. Any concern about the aerodynamics and having an 8" bumper in the back. Might it create some "lift" on the tongue?
2. When I mount it, should I leave a space between the two bumpers?
3. Planning on welding it; anyone know if the metal bumpers can take the heat from a weld without warping?

I would have no concerns with 1 $ and would simply stack with no space. However I would not use steel for the “second bumper”, rather I would use vinyl fence post and simply use industrial strength zip ties to attach there are some some extremely heavy duty zip ties available, the type that are 1/4” width.

Agree w/ clubhouse except I would stack it on top of the old bumper. No Drag. Paint it black.

Mine is under the rear frame but I'm getting ready to relocate it a little further back so the dents on my head can heal from the slide out contact.

X2.

This is what I did on my 08 Eagle. Lasted 9 years with no problem.

I like the idea of stacking on top of the old bumper. Rejected that idea at the beginning because the spare tire bracket is attached there but will relook at the idea. It also solves the drag issue. I will have to go to the storage yard today to assure that it can fit under the ladder.

You may not need one the full width of the existing bumper if you just want to store another hose. I get at least 30' in my one bumper, you may not need to go under the ladder, or, even interfere with the tire. 4' will allow you to stow another 20' hose.

Good Luck.

I stole that idea from someone on the board, and used the vinyl gutter insert as recommended as well. Works like a charm.

Added second bumper (storage)

Thanks to Grumpy for the idea, I added a second bumper for storage. Still learning how to weld but it came out pretty good. Going to Grand Canyon and some freezing weather but won't have to worry if one of the sewer hoses has an issue.

Just carefully inspect the welds that hold the lower bumper to the frame brackets. Those are the ones that usually rip loose from road forces due to the thin metal the bumper is made of.

Beefing them up may be needed now that you have more weight hanging on them.

Of course, I can't see them, so that may be something you have already addressed.

Your would have been a better solution for me except my ladder is in the way.

I was wondering if you could use a 6" Pvc pipe with a cap on each end. Just strap it on top of the rear bumper with big zip strips?

It actually slides to extend and is meant to be mounted under a TT fastened to the frame rails, I just wanted to maintain the ground clearance we have with a Baja edition.

Thanks Kanic. I will measure and see if 4" large enough for my sewer hose fittings.

I went with the PVC fence post and put it on top of the existing bumper. Since the spare tire brackets were on top of the bumper I put some rubber pads on both sides of the tire brackets to make everything level. The thing that I REALLY liked was being able to put a piece of u-shaped vinyl gutter inside the PVC and taking the hose, fittings, etc. out of the fence post in one piece. That meant that I could just leave the sewer hose inside the gutter when I connected to the septic system and use the gutter to support the hose. After dumping when we were ready to leave, just collapsed the hose, left the fittings attached to it, and put it back in the PVC post. Really easy.

I use two 4" plastic fence post attached to the top of my rear bumper. Use short ratchet straps to tie the two to the bumper. Use an insert made of rain gutter and end stops and than put sewer hose in the bottom post and my 7' ladder on the top post. Use drilled end caps on the sewer hose post and just plain end caps on the ladder post. Closures are made using brass hinges that are rivited in place.

I have an 8' length of 6" pvc secured on top of our bumper with three heavy plastic zip ties. It sits on three isolation pads to to avoid wear an corrosion between it and the bumper. There is a 6" cap on one end and plug in the other held in with a 1/4" wins screw threaded in to the tube. Have unbelievable number of items stored in there. It's been there for about 13k miles.

5” fence post will handle 90 degree fittings
