Modification question

Greetings all! Mark here - new member. Just posted a little about DW and I at the "welcome mat". So glad to be here! And here's my first question: would having a qualified electrician hardwire my hughes autoformer and surge guard affect my brand new 2014 Greyhawk 31FK warranty? Or should we just go portable with these devices which is less desirable because of weather and theft? Anyway, looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I would advise you from a master electrician view point not to change any of your wiring until your camper and appliances are out of warranty. Just my two.

Call jayco and ask them I would think if a certified electrician whas to do it , would be OK. BUT!! This is a way out of there warranty obligation and may tell you that any modification will void the warranty. Also ask if a certified repair facility can do the job. (This would be very expensive.)

I also think you should call Jayco CS for their opinion. My "gut" tells me that it will not be a problem because if, for instance, you did not have a surge guard and your air conditioner becomes toast due to a voltage spike, Jayco in all probability will not replace the AC unit under warranty because it would be the campground's fault. (sorry for the run-on sentence).

AS per law to deny warranty Jayco would have to prove that what you added was the cause of the failure.. The surge guard should be no problem if wired properly.. The Hughes auto transformer I have no idea on them as I have never even seen one..

Well, I went through a Jayco dealer and authorized warranty repair facility and they told me it would not be a problem. It is a done deal now as I had 50 amp hard wire surge protection put in along with an external monitor. Great protection and I love being able to monitor the usage.

Joe, I will speak to my dealer, but I will only let my master electrician do the install and not their service department and not just because of cost. If that doesn't fly with the warranty than I will go portable

I just came back from a 3 month trip out to the Northeast and cannot remember even one other camper around me using a surge protector. Now, maybe they had permanent ones installed so I couldn't see them. But because I never see anyone using a portable surge protector, I figure no one will steal it simply because very few people even know what it is .
I wrap the connection on my portable surge protector with Glad Press-N-Seal for weather protection. It's like a wax paper that sticks to itself. It works for us cuz we only stay in one place for a week or less.

Sometimes you run up against the unknowing.....

Some park managers get upset wanting you to remove your EMS thinking it causes problems for the park.

Some campers get upset if you have an auto-former believing it is the reason they have low voltage.

Just contempt for the unfamiliar.
