Odd Hot Water Heater Behavior

We just took our 2022 264BH out for our first trip this past weekend. I noticed an odd behavior with the hot water tank and was curious if others have seen this with a Dometic WH-6GEA.

I turned on just the electric element switch and left LP off because we had low demand for hot water. We were sitting outside by the fire at night and randomly the LP burner of the tank fired and ran for a few minutes.

I reached out to Dometic but not sure if they're just going to point me back to the dealer. Thinking maybe a bad control board which may not be worth waiting to get it into the dealer that's 3 hours away.

That's normal operation when in propane mode. Sounds like the propane was turned on and the electric was in the off position. Maybe the wires going to the propane/electric switches are reversed.

Try turning the propane switch on and the electric off. See if that stops the propane burner from cycling on and off. And see if you still have hot water all day long. If that's the case, the switch wires are reversed, in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. I just went out to the trailer after the hot water being off for over 24 hours now. Flipped the "electric" switch to on and the propane burner didn't fire. With your theory, would you expect the burner to come on right away if the wires were reversed not just randomly if both switches were on and it trying to keep up with demand?

If you had both switches off for 24 hours, yes, the water heater would immediately fire up the propane burner, or start heating the electric element, depending on which you had turned on.

If you flip electric off and turn the propane switch on, does the gas burner ignite?

If I turn off the electric switch and flip on the LP switch it tries to ignite right away.

Then that sounds normal. And you're right, you have an odd problem with the propane kicking on when it's turned off and electric is turned on.

I thought I was going nuts as well when mine did it this past weekend, I thought maybe it was a feature of the dinosaur board as my original board was dead from the factory. I ran inside as soon as it happened to check because I knew it was off and sure enough propane was off and electric only on but propane still came on that one time.

Glad I'm not alone / going crazy too. Dometic and the service department at the dealership said the propane burner should never fire when the LP side switch is turned off.

Not much more help other than having to bring it in for them to look at it. I'll post an update if I ever solve this.

Is it possible the propane switch is shorted or defective? Being on when showing off?

Are you able to reproduce the symptoms?
If you can it sounds like a wiring issue or control board issue.
If it won’t happen again it sounds more like an intermittent problem or “operator error”.
When LP is “on” does the switch light up? If not, maybe it was on.

I think I found my issue, crappy crimp connection has a couple stray wires on the LP switch. Along with a piece of Luan if moved around just right it’ll fire up LP side. Pull your control panel cover off and check the wires and clean off the debris.
