onan fuel pump

have a onan 4000w microquiet, was struggling to run and make constant power, pulled filter , it was excellent,
looked at fuel pump, as had fuel to it,
onan # is $101
on line replacements are $15 to $30
can't find an airtex, E11007,(which I prefer)(not in stock)
anyone suggest one they have experience with?

I did order a on line cheapy,( ching ching brand?)
it came coated in diesel, and was DOA.
bench test would not operate,

so . anyone?

Have you exercised the generator every month? If not, the carb could be gummed up. It is not uncommon for the carb to clog if the generator is not used often enough.

If the carb is clogged you may try running SeaFoam through it which may or may not help. Often the only remedy is to replace it.

You should be able to test the fuel pump by disconnecting the hose and aiming it into a bucket while priming the generator.

I actually did do that.

pulled fuel line off, to the carb, ,old pump, and new pump nothing,
so checked fuel supply, and it has a solid stream, Had to clamp off the
supply hose, to keep it from making a mess,

used a squeeze bottle of fuel, to carb hose, and unit ran well,
so pretty sure its 2 bad fuel pumps.
lucky me, LOL

Not generator related, but you get what you pay for. I needed two carburetors this year, one for a mower, and a leaf blower. While I was at the power equipment dealer, he showed me a 5 gallon bucket full of (new looking) off-shore carbs he's replaced on peoples equipment. Yeah, $50 for a leaf blower carb seems steep, but it sure runs like brand new.

He says it's the same deal for the "cheap knock off" fuel pumps. I prefer to buy only once and save all the aggravation.

I sold a lot of Airtex fuel and water pumps in a previous life. Never had many problems, and the reps were great. That was back when it was possible to work on vehicles, without electronic tools except a dwell meter. (Oops...I just dated myself!)
