I use a little pipe dope on mine because I don't like teflon tape. Never had a leak from the plastic plug yet but I do carry spares.

I want this!!!
I too remove the plastic hot water heater plug to drain the tank, as our TT will sit sometimes for a month before it gets used again. And yes, that plastic plug leaked on me after the second time it was removed. Teflon tape cured that, but I'm off to the hardware store for one of these brass fittings with a pedcock!

I use the plastic plug but no Teflon. I drain it after every trip and it doesn't leak. I do plan to get a spare as others have mentioned.

I use plumbers goop
Teflon tape was always for gas connections I thought
I got a 15/16 socket and extension for mine...so I hand insert it and use the socket to tighten...I do NOT torque it down as supposedly its supposed to be hand tightened...but this is easier as its hard to get to
I will be getting extras as I don't see this cheap plastic plug, threading into steel/aluminum, lasting very long

Anyone know the thread size on the plastic plugs? Thread pitch, etc.?

I've always used teflon tape and had good luck - several years running on the same plug. It can be used for gas or water, but not gasoline, oils, etc. My cousin is a plumber and he recommended I use the tape, since I remove it frequently. I carry a roll of the tape in my toolbox, in the truck bed. It has come in handy for other things, as well.
The plastic plug should last quite awhile as long as it is not overtightened. But a spare is always a good idea.

I bought a PVC plug. They are pretty cheap and much more durable than the soft plastic ones that came from the factory.
We've only taken our new Jayco out once, but I drained all the water by the low point drains and emptied it out with no problem. I opened the low points for both water lines and opened the faucet to cold water, then I opened the relief valve in the water heater.
When I got home and took off the plastic drain plug, nothing came out... it was already empty.

When I open relief valve water splashes all over everything as opposed to the drain plug...not sure if this will hurt anything

I you relieve the pressure on the water system first and open the low points then open the relief valve it should not spray all over. Even if it sprays out it will not hurt anything. Mine also drains completely this way without having to remove the plug - just takes longer.

White Teflon for water and yellow for gas. Have used the white plastic plug for three years, no tape-no leak. Cross threading is the leak problem, and that is very easy to do when putting the plug back in.

Your dealer will have them. And most camping supply stores, like Camping World, will also have them. Probably eben Amazon, if you have the make and model number, although I'd bet it is a standard size.

I have 2 spares I bought at my local hardware store. I think I paid 50 cents apiece for them. I coat the threads on mine with a little pipe dope, seems to "lubricate" them a little and seal better. I'm still on the original one after 3 years and I drain the water heater after every trip.

Many pipe dopes aren't compatible with plastic. Be sure to read the label.

Amazon.com: Atwood (91857) 1/2" Drain Plug Kit, (Pack of 2): Automotive
I picked a pack of these up for preventative measures. My original plug still works though it's a bit chewed up from when I tried to use channel locks to remove it.
