I hear you about the plastic stop. The end was crumbling from UV degradation on my 2001. As it is hollow, I just glued a short stub of red rubber air hose into the end with Goop glue. Been working fine and is now much quieter.
Were I you, I would go to Home Depot or other store and buy a round plastic knob guard plate intended for plaster walls. You can then use sealant on the hole and cover the repair with the flat plate knob guard.
They come with adhesive strips, but for outdoor use I would use some added Goop glue too. Goop sealant would also work just fine to repair the hole before installing the cover. It is also available at Home Depot.
The knob guard probably doesn't have any UV protection so if you don't paint it for protection then it might need replacement after some years.
I'm certain that there are other ideas to repair the damage too.
