Our main A/C unit seems to be cooling as expected but is making a noise that I'm curious about.
It wil vary between a gentle "purring" to a louder "throbbing" or "drumming" (the Bride likens it to a helicopter passing over". I think it's the compressor making the noise and not the fan. The noise varies in a cycle lasting about a minute.
Is this a low freon thing? Can freon be added to these A/C units? Is it a sign that I should start robbing the beer/wine fund to finance a replacement?
Your experiences and opinions are welcomed.

To determine if it's the blower motor turn the a/c off then turn your fan to on.
That way your compressor is not running only your fan.
If noise is not heard then problem lies with the compressor. The system is sealed so no way to add freon. Is this a coleman unit?
