Removing level indicator sensors

I know that the sensors in my gray and black tanks have rubber grommets that are compressed by the screw running through them when they are installed.

I've looked at the modified sensors that supposedly prevent or at least reduce false level readings, but the price tag seems pretty steep for what they are. I think I can make my own for just a dollar or two rather than $70 for the super sensors.

Two Questions:

1. Is it possible to remove the existing sensors from the tanks without damaging the rubber grommets?

2. Is there a source where you can buy just the sensors probes without buying the whole system?

My kitchen gray tank sensors read full for over a year regardless of full or empty. A friend suggested I empty the tank and put a few gallons of water in it to allow sloshing around while traveling and add one full gallon of bleach. 230 miles later I emptied the tank after arriving back at my home base and the sensors all worked perfectly like new. I now add a little bleach to this tank after each dump, but only a few ounces just to keep things clean. I will be traveling 250 miles in mid-May and I'm going to try this with my black tank. These sensors have registered nothing but full for the past 4 years.

Ed I would not put bleach in the black tank. It will kill the good bacteria that helps keep the odor down. I would add the water, some liquid fabric softener (surfactant, aka water wetter),and a large bad of ice.

As for for the OP, I have not pulled one a part, so I do know. But I can not believe there is a seal on the inside as it would be difficult to install even at the factory. I sect there is an O-ring only on the outside. I bet if you do a YouTube video search on changing out the sensors someone posted a how to video.

The sensor looks like this. The sensor is put in from the outside of the tank and then the nuts are tightened compressing the rubber to seal the hole. I just don't know if the rubber will stretch back out if you loosen the nuts enough to let you pull the assembly out of the tank.
