Roof a/c bench test

Can i test one on the bench?
Got a lead on a carrier roof a/c that is slightly used. Want to test it before buying it. The guys claims it came off a motor home that was totaled in a storm. He removed it and was keeping it as a spare for new trailer he bought but has recently sold that. It is a carrier v so not sure of exact age but if i can pick this thing up for around a hundred dollars then it might be worth the gamble. Thanks Robert

My view is: it is the sellers job to assure the buyer that it works.

I've never done it but I would think you should be able to.

If I was trying to bench test a unit, I would
1. wire in to an extension cord to plug it in sized correctly
2. Make sure the switch is off and plug the unit in
3. Turn on the fan and make sure that works ok
4. Turn on the ac and see if the compressor comes on
I would be looking for air flow across the coils
I would be looking for the coils to chill and condense

I guess if it gets cold and the fan/fans work correctly then I would assume it is good.

Bench test is not a bad idea. I would also be sure that it will fit your rig and wiring. All rv AC units are not universal fit.

X2 on dougs post. Also wouldnt hurt to sit a thermometer close to the vents to verify its ability to cool. Let it run for awhile to make sure there isnt a delayed cooling issue. Oh..dont for to get a new roof seal!

FYI - Carrier quit making RV roof airs a few years ago.

Update;
Picked up the unit yesterday. It's a carrier 13,500 btu hooked it up and it came on with no problems other than a little squeak from the blower motor but i am sure that will go away with some run time. Going to clean it up real good and get a new gasket before installing it.
The best part is got it for 100.00$ it is a 05 model and was only used a few times a year till 08 when hurricane ike sent a tree across the front of the motorhome totaling it out.
This will save me over 400.00 $ on a brand new unit, so if i can get a couple of hot summers out of it i will be happy.

Carrier was one of the best A/C that I have been around in the RV'S. Sad that they quit making them. They cooled great. You should not have any trouble. Good luck.
