Routers without internet?

I want to stream a movie off my phone onto a chromcast/firestick... I know the chromecast would need to be linked to a router, but would it need to be hooked up to a modem with internet?

Hopefully that makes sense lol.

Theoretically, you should be able to link your firestick to your smart phone. You will need to put your phone in AP mode and start up your firestick. On the firestick, go to network connection setup and you should see your smartphone. Your smartphone should give you a code to type into your firestick setup. The firestick should then be ready for movies.

Understand, that if you do not have a great signal, well the movie may keep stopping.

I "run" my firestick off my phone as a "hotspot". As long as the signal is sufficient to make a phone call, the movies run fine, no buffering.......see above

Hmmmm we have chromecast but I'm guessing pretty much same as firestick.

As for signal, we download from Netflix before we leave on the trips, so signal wont be an issue.

So you have downloaded movie files? What do they reside on, and why do you feel you need a router? I can play movie files off of a menory stick plugged into my Roku, without router or internet.

I think I know what you mean, I was googling it last night.

I want to download a movie from netflix to my device, then stream it to my chromecast connected to my tv in the camper. I will have no internet where I am. The chromecast and the device need to be on the same wifi network to work, but apparently it doesnt need an actual internet connection to work. Only thing is if going from an apple deice to the chromecast there was an app you had to download to do it. From android device to the chromecast was ok.

so setup your wifi router at home first, then take it out to the campsite, connect your chromecast and your device to the wifi network. You will have no actual internet access but the chromecast and your device will be connected.

I will hopefully have a chance to try this this weekend and will report back

If you have an iPhone you can use one of these https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Lightni.../dp/B009WHV3BM and you won’t need a WiFi network in your rig. If you have no internet connection and just want to stream downloaded content, this works great. If you have connection but they cap your hotspot speed on your phone, this doesn’t hit that cap and works great.

I have a Wi-Fi router in my TT that I use for various connections (SOLAR, Movies on my HD (Raspberry Pi), sensors...) and it is not connected to the internet. I have been tossing around the possibility of purchasing an Apple Lightning to RJ45 connector for the addition of an Internet connection to the Wi-Fi router.

I am also working on using my Raspberri Pi as a Client-router to the CG's AP and having that provide internet to the Wi-Fi router. You are probably wondering, "Why not use my Wi-Fi signal booster", well if caught using the signal extender, you will be asked to leave the CG.

So those are my Wi-Fi routher/Internet connection projects that are ongoing.

If you get the connector below you will have internet access from your iPhone on your devices that are using your Wi-Fi router.

I have an outdoor Access Point/Client Bridge that I attach to the flagpole. With it I connect to whatever WiFi signal is available (it turns out I usually detect only the CG WiFi and it is normally worthless). The outdoor unit is cabled to my inside router which broadcasts its LAN. All of our “interweb toys” are config’d to connect to the LAN. If I can connect the AP/CB to a working WiFi signal then all the toys can access with minimal hassle.
One of the toys is a wireless NAS (network attached storage) which is our media server, I rip and save every movie/TV series I can and store it there.
I have a Roku stick attached to the TV so we can stream video to that or to one of the apple devices. Since my streaming is all local I’m not dependent on an interweb connection.
My NAS also broadcasts its own LAN AP so I can connect directly to it from devices if I wish. I have a little more than 800 videos currently stored on it that are a mix of movies and TV series and have used about 1T of the 4T on the NAS.

I have Wi-Fi signal booster also, but the CG has strict rules regarding the use of Wi-Fi signal boosters/extenders. If you use one, you will be escorted out of the CG. The CG has their ISP Wi-Fi provider keep an eye out for violators. Easy to detect. The CG has a sign on the front door regarding their policy and it is included in the brochure.

So, my options are use my iPhone (which goes through my Uniden Cell Phone signal booster, everyone should have one of these) to provide the movies... that I want to watch if they are not part of my 183 movies on my hard drive. Or.... program one of my Raspberry Pi's as a Client-Router (with an external antenna of course) to provide my media center with CG internet. This will not show up as a Wi-Fi Signal booster.

My TT is located about 150' away from the CG's AP, and it is new equipment so the signal is GREAT! Just on holiday weekends, I do not even boot up the laptop.

Just trying to stay out of CG trouble.

Just talked myself into ordering one. When I get it and test it out, I will post the results.

Yes, I remember that you had one. I picked your brain prior to my purchase (and a few times after). I haven’t run into a CG that prohibits the booster’s use but I’ll keep my eye out for that. I do think I’ve run into places that will block the use (without the escort from the CG). Hard to be sure but a couple of instances everything seemed good, it just wouldn’t work. It’s cool technology and I enjoy tinkering with it when I have spare time but at the end of the day it just doesn’t prove to be very useful to me.
The few times I get it to work and the CG WiFi is usable I get all puffed up (“Hey, look at what I can do!”) and everybody’s response is, “Meh.” Oh well.

Some of the CG''s got smart and had their provider add a sign-in page. The Wi-Fi extenders like it where you just put in the pass word and get confused when the CG server asks you to put a check in a box.

Not saying that this is a difficult thing to override, but you need a modem that allows you to change the MAC address of the Wi-Fi modem to the same as your Wi-Fi extender, or the various movie streaming boxes. Once you log in, your toys will work fine.

I probably have one of the last USB modems that allow you to do that (has to be at least 7 o 8 years old), as they are no longer available on Amazon. Some of the versions of Windows allow you to do it also, probably NT, can not remember.

That is the least of my problems now.

I have used the Sceenbeam device for six months, and it works marvelously. It makes a direct wireless connection between my phone and the TV. No need for a router, and I don't need to burn any data via hotspot.

Windows 10 will let you share its internet connection. I plan to try using a laptop to log into the campground WiFi and then connect our devices to the laptop. Bonus will be it will plug into the HDMI hub as well and we can play our movies to the TV by switching its input source to HDMI instead of antenna.

I use Chromecast (v1) on my RV TV's and stream from my phone. The trick is when you are at home on home network, run the Chromecast setup...once it is setup you are good to go. At home my RV is too far to connect to my home network so put my cell phone in "hot spot" mode, then I use a laptop set to my hotspot for internet, then I use laptop to configure Chromecast again using my hotpot as the network...once setup it is good to go.

I stream from my phone directly to my tv using SmartLink. It's already on my Android phone and works with my Samsung tv.
