Slide out awnings
I see some references to small awnings that cover the top of the slide out, some factory, some home made.
Being the first slide out experiance in my new 5er, is this common? I'm assuming its rain protection.... Is this after some period of wear on the gaskets?

I had them on my 5er,I will put one on my Eagle this summer.
They just help protect top of the slide and keep leaves and stuff away from the gaskets.

Did not have on my last Jayco travel trailer. Just bought the fifth wheel with 3 slides. Had dealer put them on. Was tired of sweeping leaves and pine straw off of slides before sliding them back in.

The slide toppers are either a love em or hate em deal. In windy areas they can make a lot of noise and keep you awake to the point of pulling in the slides. If you camp in the woods they keep leaves, needles, and sticks off the top of your slide. For me I really don't want them in windy Az but they would be nice to have on our river lot.

So not so much rain or water, but debris....
Not much of that here in Colorado, but I hadn't though about having to sweep that before closing slide.
Thanks

I have one over my slide and would do it again. It keeps the leaves and stuff off the slide and I have heard of people who get water running in the trailer from some puddles on the slide who don't have awnings on their slides. I would recommend it.

I'm planning on sewing a custom one up out of a heavy duty PVC coated tarp that you install manually on the slide once its deployed. I refuse to spend $750 on a magical factory made roll-up one.

Yeah, I have no idea why they are so expensive. Not much to them. I guess until I am too old to get up there, I will live without them.
