Suggested brake controller??
Hey there!
I just bought a new (to me) 2007 Octane 24ZX toy hauler, and need some advice on a brake controller. I currently have a five year old timed controller (Cequent??) that worked great for my old hybrid trailer. Should I be looking at getting a new proportional controller, or will this one work for this heavier trailer?

Get a MaxBrake or Prodigy 3 or 2 brake controller.

I have p2 works great. IIRC the difference between P2 and P3 is support for Hydraulic over Electric brakes, if you don't need that save a few bucks and get the P2, same electronic braking algorithm.

I use the Prodigy P3 and like it, so do many others as this exclusive JOF brake controller poll suggests:

Thanks for the input!! Is this something I should look at before I head out on my first road trip, or will the old one work for now?

I have the Tekonsha Voyager Proportional Controller. It has limited mounting options compared to the P2 and LED feedback vs the Prodigy's display. It supposedly has the Tekonsha "learning" algorithm and it will save you $50-$60. No problems or issues.....

Ditch the time delay controller and install a real brake controller before your next outing.

I finally took your advice and bought a P3 controller, it repalced a Curt time delay controller.
Let me say.... it made a world of difference! Even the DW commented about how smoother the braking is!!

Glad you are enjoying smoother braking.
Other than cost, I see no reason why time delay controllers are sold. I don't think they should be used on any large trailer.

Can someone share their settings on Tekonsha P3? I have Jayco Jayflight 22FB 5500lbs loaded, towing with Tundra 2013. Tundra is 6500 lbs loaded (passengers, fuel, cargo) I can not lock my wheels when setting brake controller. At Boost one and setting at 7, I can feel the trailer jerking TW. So i changed it to no Boost with 9.8 setting. I can stop w/in 30 feet on flat with this setting at 30 mph without applying TW brakes just using Lever on the controller. Whats the proper setting since i can not lock up my wheels with any of the settings? Any suggestions?
