I have also been looking into purchasing an EMS and have decided to go with the Progressive Industries HW-30C hardwired unit .I saw a good idea a guy on another forum had of installing a plug on one end of the unit and a receptacle on the other, that way if you had a problem you can bypass the EMS or if you sell your rig you can keep your EMS.Obviously it would mean cutting into your cable inside and installing a plug/receptacle on it as well.

I have the Surge Guard and highly recommend. It will shut power OFF if anything is incorrect with the electric and also tells you what the problem is on the display.
It will delay electric for 2 minutes while it checks to insure everything is good with electric.

I also installed the Progressive Industries HW-30C hardwired unit. It was a very straight forward installation. Here is a VIDEO of my install.

Good luck but the EMS by Progressive gives much more protection than just a surge guard.

Really??

From what I have read on the Progressive, if there is a problem it gives you a code and then you need to look up the code to see what the problem is.

On my Surge Guard it will show on the display if something is wrong.......and tell you WHAT it is, NOT a code.

The EMS will give you an error code, all you do is look to the right on the face of the EMS and it provides a key defining the code. Couldn't be more simple.

Thanks for the input, I could just run 30AMP extension from it to pedestal. Good idea I had not considered. Bottom line no way around cutting in to provided shore cord am just limited for mounting location.

I have two of the 50A Progressive Industries Surge Arrestors (not the EMS) connected to the pedestal my mobile home connects to. I had been racking my brain on how I could install whole house surge protection for my mobile home and AC (the home and the AC each have their own outlet on the pedestal) when it dawned on me that this would be the easiest and least expensive way.

Surge Guard is a brand name of an EMS. Kind of like Kleenex or Q-tip. The Surge Guard EMS and the Progressive Industries EMS are nearly identical in specifications with the Surge Guard brand having a little edge with a slightly higher Joule rating.

Wanderer's plug style has me planning.

Wish the HW30 had a wireless display but a 14' data cable gives you a lot of options.

Is that connector to the data cable a regular size like a CAT 5?

It's a Progressive Industries proprietary cable, not Cat 5. I called them about getting a longer cable, but they wanted too much (I'm remembering $25). I just mounted it above the thermostat which could be reached with the supplied cable.

Correct, Surge Guard is a 'brand name' by Technology Research.

Here are a couple of recent reviews to help those that are in the market to protect their rigs;

I concur with what the Reviews said, Progressive IS the best choice, not only because it offers a lifetime warranty.

I have had one for years, has cut power off when low voltage became a potential issue.
Low voltage is the most often issue at campgrounds, and can potentially cause major issues.

Few hundred dollars for a lifetime, best insurance around.

I always use the portable 30 amp model of the Progressive Industries EMS. A hard wired one would probably be better from a security standpoint.

With my portable unit, I use a very heavy cable to help secure it to the post. I know a determined thief can still get my unit, however it should help secure it against the casual thief who will take something, just because it's there.
