Surge protectors
What's the latest opinion of 50 amp surge protectors. ( in line at post )
I see units everywhere from $100 to $400.

You go for the size of your rig... most likely 30 amp. That way the plug and power all match.

X2 on the EMS-PT50C . It has saved me more than once. I never ever hook up without it.

What does your trailer have? A 50 amp will be next to useless if you have a 30 amp trailer..
I would NEVER plug into any power outlet without one...

I have a Progressive SSP50 for sale, if anyone is interested (just send pm). My previous RV was 50 amp but my Jayco is 30 amp so I don't need it.

Just to clarify......
Many times, this thread included, the term "surge protector" is used generically. Let's make a clear distinction here.
A "surge protector" in its true sense only suppresses very high, short duration voltage spikes. It does NOT protect you from the more common problems of improper voltage and mis-wiring.
An Electrical Management System (EMS) does much more than a surge protector. In addition to surge suppression it will shut of power for under/over voltage, open ground, open neutral, reverse hot/neutral.

For $ 330 I bought a Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C. Ill let you know how the install goes, but it looks pretty strait forward - that's for the feedback

Volvite- So after some research I went with the progressive, hard wired with remote display. Price, Features, JOF support and user reviews all lined up to be the right choice. I'm pretty handy, so I chose to go hard wired versus post mount
Let us know what you choose to do

Thanks for the feedback. I too would like to hard wire one as well. How difficult is this process? While I'm not an expert electrician, I do most of my own auto repairs and work around the house. Just not sure where to start and install an EMS unit if and when I get one.

Yup, it's manageable if you are "handy-guy" oriented. I also have one of the Progressive remote display units. Hard part was bending the thick wires where I wanted em. I forget the wire guage I bought but it was suggested in the install manual. Scope out where you will install and estimate the additional wire length you will need. I got mine at Lowes. Buy 2 extra feet unless the run is straight (or make another trip to the hardware store like me).
