Surge Supressors
Just picked up a new Jayco 321 Fifth wheel. Since most manufacturers do include any type of surge suppression, I have always purchased a post type suppressor just for the added protection. I am now looking at a Progressive Industries HW-50 that will provide surge protection as well as additional filtering of the incoming electric. This "better" system will provide surge protection as well as current deviation protection. I am questioning if this really needed or is it over kill. I can see surges in the line but is a drop or deviation in current common enough to justify the cost of a suppressor like the HW-50, about $300. Anyone had any experience with this..

We just use the TRC 44260 30 Amp Circuit protector and have been at numerous state, fed and private camp grounds without any issue with the power or surge protector. That being said, to me its just a matter of protecting the investment.
If my trailer was more expensive, or if I was full time, I'd put something more expensive protection in just so I don't have to worry about having an issue or taking it in to a repair shop for a month to fix it.
I'd be curious how many people have either had a power issue they were protected from with a more expensive device or have never had an issue.

There are numerous threads on this site about what you are asking about. I have a PT50C (actually I have 2 of them, one as a spare) and will not plug in anywhere without it. At my home base right now I am having a repetitive problem with high voltage spikes on one leg. It has happened 12 times over the past 4 weeks. The power company knows it is happening and doesn't seem to be able to stop it. This past September my PT50C gave up it's life and saved all of my electrical stuff. PI's lifetime warranty replaced it.

Low voltage (<104), High voltage (>132), incorrect wiring, open neutral and momentary interruptions (which the EMS provides protection for) are far more frequent than extremely high, short duration spikes (Lightning strikes) which is the only thing surge suppressors will catch.
Is it worth the higher price? Definitely!

Some high end units come with the built in models. That's why they are high end!

One bad electrical problem is going to cost you a lot more than $300. I have a 30 AMP Progressive Industries and a 50 AMP Progressive Industries post mounts. Never hook up without one or the other. I have been in RV parks that experienced low voltage issues and the Progressive Industries have always caught it and reacted accordingly.

We went years without one and never had a problem. 2 years ago I decided to get a portable 30amp P.I. EMS based on the comments on this Forum. Last year we were camping in Brown County State Park and all of a sudden the power went down in the camper. Called park maintenance and they had to replace something in the box as voltage was fluctuating wildly. Glad I had it vs. replacing most of the appliances and possibly the AC.

Both trailers we've owned have had a Progressive EMS, a 30A pole-mount and now a 50A hard-wired. Both have caught "events" but I can't say if any of them would have been fatal to my electronics but any trailer I own will have an EMS. It's true they're a bit $$$ but this is an item that I don't want to go cheap on.
