water heater question

hay all I am having a issue with the water heater . . . I think .
First time lighting it I filled with water and lit it no problem, mine has a pilot light this looks good but when I turn it on to heat water I get a large orange flame, it does not look clean like I would expect.
After 15 minutes the water was getting warm I went around to turn it off and there is soot on the camper above the water heater. I have looked for a book on this unit and do not see one, must have been lost. is there an adjustment for this? everything else works good, clean flame. Thanks, Ray

Yes there is a adjustment. there should be a sleave the will slide on the tube that the flame comes out of. there is usually a set screw of sorts that locks it down into place. simply slide it left/right to allow more or less air into the tube to adj the amount of oxygen that will mix with the propane and this should change your flame type. Oh, maksure no debris/trash etc inside tube aswell which could effect the flame.

Odd that the first time it was good and second time there was a problem. Something has changed.
The video ExJay points out looks like good info. I'd be more sustpect of something plugging up the heater tube and preventing good air flow. Do you have dirt-dauber screens? If not, I'd suggest checking for nests that block the air flow.

Thanks for the info and the video
I tried the adjustment and that did not work still had smoke and a yellow flame.
I do not see many parts to go wrong so I took every thing apart and cleaned with air, put it back together and now I have a nice blue flame.
thanks for the help!
