Water Pump cycling

2016 27RLS

As issues I read about on here go, this is not a deal breaker. Nonetheless it has been an ongoing issue, even after 2 (TWO) stays at the dealer to repair it. This being our first trip of the season, I find I still have the problem.

My water pump will cycle for about 1/2 to 1 second every 5 or so minutes. That frequency varies.... with the only variable I can think of being outside temperature.

I have no idea how extensively the dealer sought the cause, but they seemed to be conscientious and had it for a couple of weeks on one stay. I was pretty adamant the 2nd time I had to bring it in, so they had a mandate to get it fixed.

There are no visible leaks anywhere, although we do have the bottom covering. I'm assuming the dealer would have located any leaks. The water pressure is fine when it's running.

I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the dealer examined everything. Can I get some ideas? Maybe to take back to them this upcoming THIRD time?

Thank you in advance!

You have a leak! Very small but none the less you are getting a pressure drop and that's what causes the pump to run for just a second. It could be one of several valves. Faucets you should see a drip. Could be your toilet valve, that one is tough to see if it's leaking. Your water heater plug and pressure relief valve can also make this happen if they are not sealed tight.

X2!
I have the 2015 27RLS, once the water has fully filled the lines and all the air is out, the pump rarely cycles. Cycling every 5mins IMO is a leak.
Also, do not count on the dealer doing a thorough job, they are more likely to take a quick look and then claim it is fixed.

Other than water leaking, it seems a faulty pump could have an internal leak. Either the pump could be changed or a shutoff valve placed in the pump output line to isolate the problem to either the pump or 'down stream' from the pump.
(BTW, you only know about the leak when using your trailer's pump because the pump cycles. When on 'city' water, if it's not your pump, water is still leaking. )

If you have a leak, it needs to fixed. Over time, water is a TT killer.

Usual they avoid lines in the underbelly unless they have no choice incase there has to be plumbing on both sides of the unit. If there is no insulation in the underbelly those pipes are prone to freezing. You definitely has a very small leak or the backup valve in the pump is leaking. To test that you have to block the pressure side of the pump. I use a 4 ft. Pex pipe capped and installed on the pressure side. You might have to get an extra pump fitting.

The pump can also be leaking back into the tank.. I will bet this is where you are having your problem

When you're looking for the simple solutions first, don't forget your low point drains. Mine have a tendency to leak if they're not seated just right. This could be a cause too.

I agree that water is probably leaking back through the pump. Running some brands of pumps dry, even for a few minutes can damage the pump impelled enough that it can leak.
Some other types of pumps use a check value and that could also be bad.

And check the toilet

If the flush valve isn't completely closing it'll seep and slowly fill the toilet bowl, but if slow enough, folks are flushing it empty now and then. A test is to flush it dry with pump off, then turn on pump and check it after a few hours. If water is pooling you have your answer.
This would also happen on city water and could be a disaster, or an early morning surprise.

An RV water pump is a diaphragm pump and in most cases running dry won't hurt it. I've inadvertently run mine for many hours dry with no damage. The diaphragm could have a hole in it allowing the water to run back into the tank. Like other folks mentioned you'd have to either replace the pump or put a valve just before or after the pump to verify this.

Whenever mine did this, the cause was a leaky backflow prevention in the water pump. Those were all used pumps with some miles on them. Yours is new. If it's a faulty check valve or internal backflow prevention, it should be under warranty. However, it could also be leftover plastic "chips" from drilling the connections on your water tank. If the tank was not completely flushed by mfg, dealer, or by you, those chips can lodge in the water pump and cause a leak. A very small leak can cause cycling.

This all assumes, of course, you don't have a leak elsewhere in the system that you may not be able to see. Check under your coach at all connections, and as someone said earlier, check your low point drains to ensure they are fully seated.

Lots of potential areas for leaks. You could have a little construction debris that is stuck somewhere, such in the diaphragm or in a low point drain valve. Depending on the debris it might have nicked an O-ring.

Here are some of the spots I have had issues with over the years; Low point drain had a small leak, could see a wet spot under the trailer at the drain points, had to lube the O-ring. The screen filter just before the pump had lots of hairline fractures (1st year), replaced the cup and the pump cycling went a way, it did not leak water, but it did allow air to pass through the cracks and into the system. A couple of thumb screws that secure the pex water lines to the faucets were loose, I noticed water droplets under the sinks, this happened after the first few trips, hand tightened. Outside shower faucet, when placing the shower head back into the tiny compartment I have turned the valve very slightly and had a leaky shower head, done this many times.

If your pump is cycling you have a leak somewhere. The last place I would expect is the pump diaphragm, and it is the hardest to verify and get to.

Mine's been doing that for quite a while now. I've checked for leaks several times and found none, so it's got to be in the pump itself, probably a gunked up check valve. Heck, maybe I'll tear it apart today and see if I can fix it.

Wow

THANK YOU all for the excellent information.

The dealer said they pressure tested the plumbing and found no leaks. So could it follow that the pump really is the problem? It is leaking back or not holding?

Or is the pump part of that pressure test.

Very interesting stuff. I would have thought they'd be able to tell it was the pump the easiest.

Just my opinion, but your dealer didn't go far enough...
If there are no leaks,
then the pump must be defective.
They should have replaced the pump.

Had the same problem, accept my pump was cycling every 5 seconds. This started after an improper winterization by the dealer. Pump was replaced as a warranty item after a pressure testing of the lines passed.
