Weighing left and right sides of Camper

I'm not too good at using the search feature so this may be covered already. But our camper has our first slideouts. I'm guessing the driver side weighs quite a bit more than the passenger side. I believe some tire pressure adjustment might be in order. Comments on that? And, where/how do you weigh each tire or at least each side? State patrols have portable scales and I'd guess they'd work, but who else would have those that you could go to?

Call your city hall or county offices. I was able to find a local scale that let you use the scale for free. If you need a certificate from Cali DMV, then there is a charge. Hope this helps some

And ya know, I never really seriously considered side weights, just relied on visuals from my rear view mirror. We still have to take our tt again to check on current weights so just for the heck of it, we're going to weigh each side

Tire manufacturers recommend that the tire pressures on each axle are the same. When the slides are retracted the weight will transfer to the center of the unit anyway. Just follow the recommended tire pressures listed on the manufacturer's placard on the left front of the rig and you will be fine.

I've read otherwise, but like your information. Makes life easier. Thanks.

Could you share, or provide a link to the data that you have read that differs from 'rray32539' prior statement?

Depending on floorplans, slides, etc., it is feasible that "loaded" scaled weights may vary from left side to right side, or even from tire to tire..., and there could be other variables that could came into play. The important thing is that the OEM axles, and wheels/tires are sized to accommodate these variables on the particular RV model in question under specified loaded conditions.

I'm interested to hear how you formulate a tire pressure adjustment based on the individual weights you come up with.

Bob

Sorry, it was just something that came up, probably on another site, simply because I follow it a lot. Anyway, it was months ago. I just recall some chat about slides scewing weights and accounting for it with TP adjustments. There's a lot of bad information on the net, this could very well be an example. Still, weighing both sides of the axles is harmless. I've always read that it's important to have tires and pressures match up, so I too would wonder how you would account for a weight disparity.

Manufacturers have charts for the amount of air pressure required for a tire based on the weight the tire is bearing. The dealers can get those charts for you. Getting them to do so might be another story.

Even when all the slides are in, the weight of the trailer from side to side still can vary depending on what is in the slides and where it is located. Weighing each tire would be the best way to determine how balanced the load is. If it varies very much, it would be better to correct the weight distribution if possible rather than adjust tire pressures. Ideally, weight should be the same side to side on each axle and air pressure should be equal on both tires on each axle.

I only have CAT scales available for my weigh-ins, but it would be interesting to see the side-to-side difference (if any). My kitchen is directly across from my slide, so maybe the design engineers factored in for the opposing weights.......wishful thinking?

Also, weighing the side-to-side in static mode may not be representative of the actual weights while towing down the road (suspension in motion). I tend to load heavy so I always maintain the tire manufacturer's maximum tire pressure rating in my TT tires, and haven't had any problems with wear or over-heating in years.

Just a little factoid; My loaded (ready to camp) TT tongue weight is 1,200lbs (using my Sherline scale), but just opening my slide the loaded tongue weight drops to 900lbs..

Interesting. But don't you have to have a pilot car out front warning "WIDE LOAD"??!!

I knew that was coming!

Think I should consider dropping down to a 1,000lb spring bar rating? (kidding of course)

Not very aerodynamic doing that.. might have to add a vertically mounted air foil to counter that... ... yeah if you cant tell I am joking

some how I think my side to side weights are fairly equal. I have two slides opposite each other that are over the axles. The bedroom slide on the driver side is balanced with the weight of my wifes clothes in the drawers on the opposite wall.

It is really a shame that the company " A weight we go" is no longer in business. they weighed every wheel made loading recommendations and tire pressure recommendations .. and of course told you if you were overweight.. THE RIG NOT YOU...LOL

Ok, I found something that may peak your interest while surfing around the net, so I can't take any credit for it:

"Here's the quick and simple method to check for proper operating pressure:

Get an infrared (IR) temp gauge at Sears, HD, etc. When the tires are warmed up from driving, take a tempurature reading at each tire tread outer edge, and in the center of the tread. (3 shots per tire) If the outer temps are hotter than the center, the tire pressure is too low. If the center temp is higher, the pressure is too high. General numbers are about 1-2 psi difference for every 5 F temp difference".

Something to think about anyways

Bob

I like that idea. I'll see what one would cost.
