What size wire for 50amp EMS?

I’m getting ready to install the Progressive 50 hardwired EMS and don’t want to cut my existing wire. The existing wire is in such a rats nest I couldn’t read the numbers on it. I thought I needed 6 gauge but that wire at Home Depot is a lot thicker than what i have internally in my camper and about the same size as my power cord. First should my internal wire be thinner than my external cord? Second what wire do I need to buy to use from EMS to converter?

Yes, get a piece of 6/3 wire. You’ll only need 2-3 feet of it. Disconnect the shore power wire from the breakers and insert them on the “in” side of the EMS. Then use your wire from Home Depot going from the “out” side of the EMS to the breakers.

I did what Tom suggests. No cutting involved which is good if you wanted to upgrade the trailer and take the EMS with you. However, I bought 3 or 4 feet and it wasn’t quite enough, hadda go back for a longer piece. I found wrestling the wire to be a chore, it’s really stiff.

You need to buy 8-4 SO or SJ (it's flexible) cable from an electrical wholesale house. (yes they will do cash sales). #8 is rated for 50amps and you need 4 conductors: 2 "hots", neutral and ground.
