Where to get insurance

I just got a quote for my new RV and I was amazed. It was more than all my other vehicles combined for one year.

What do you pay and who do you recommend to get coverage from?

These numbers won't apply to your trailer, but they should make you feel better about what you pay. I insure through a company called Hi-Sage which is a Progressive agent. I pay $664 and have 500K/500K/300K (bodily injury/uninsured motorist/damage if hit-n-run) coverage with no deductible (longevity with the company decreases your deductible and I've been with them long enough to have no deductible). Your trailer should be much much less than that.
I would insure through USAA but they use Progressive Insurance anyway. They don't provide their own RV coverage.

I was wondering the same thing. I know there are many threads about insurance on this forum and rv.net. The problem is there are so many variables that contribute to the cost of the premium.
If you think it's high then shop.
I have mine with Progressive and have decreasing deductible which is now $0.00
I would like to hear from others that have shopped around and who they ended up with and why.

We put our trailer on AAA policy and it wasn't very expensive as I recall, (don't have it in front of me right now). We just have a 17' trailer so, I guess it all depends on what you're insuring.

We use Allied Insurance, a Nationwide company.

Without getting into all the details ours is a separate RV policy with very good coverage, and most importantly to me it has liability coverage while unhitched. We pay ~$210 year.

Where to get insurance

Insured with Erie Insurance along with our house and vehicles (so multi-policy discount applies). The trailer alone is $153 a year.

I am with USAA for my truck/car/house/trailer. For just the trailer, I am at $465 a year with full coverage 100k/300k/100k.

I have the vanishing deductible as well which after 6 years has now vanished with Progressive. At 161.00 a year, its the cheapest insurance I have in contrast to the OP`s dilemma. As mentioned many variables go into the price of insurance.

I did not get to shop around as much as I wanted but winded up paying $525 for a year on my new TT with Progressive.

Farmers wanted $1500 a year with three other vehicles already carried on their policy.

I might just switch it all over to Progressive when I get back from Middlebury.

P.S. They cancelled my Ram 4500 policy, to boot. Saying they considered it a commercial vehicle and they no longer will cover it.

I wonder when USAA started covering trailers. 3 years ago when we bought ours, they only covered motor coaches and referred me to Progressive to cover the TT. No problems with Progressive and we pay $30/month even after dropping my Harley off the multi-vehicle policy. I have no had to make a claim with Progressive...that is the true test of a good insurance company.

We also have USAA for our TT. $300/yr. Comp/collision/liability. Covered 100% of time, being stored or in use.

Sounds like time to shop around. I would recommend a larger company, where you can get a claim agent fairly quickly out to your site.

We have state farm, for everything. Just got the bill, $500 deductible, full coverage, $219/year, and I thought that was expensive.

Sounds like State Farm just does not want to write any new policies. Granted, my unit is brand new but what they quoted me was ridiculous. Even the agent was in disbelief when she gave me the numbers and checked with her supervisor.

As stated there are many variables that go into the quote. It's hard to compare state to state or co to co since we all have different history. The key I feel is to ask the what if's. Are you covered once unhooked? Are you covered if a flood occurs in the CG? My first policy was only a rider policy that did not fully cover me once disconnected from the TV. Nothing happened, but as I learned I adjusted to better meet my needs.

Also some ins co. prorate the days used vs having to call and tell them it is not on the road to give you a better cost.

Another thing to consider is replacement cost vs worth. Some ins providers will insure your unit at the current years model for 5 years then go to purchase cost thereafter. Depreciation the first 3 years is huge and with the new costs escalating that gap is significant. If totaled you would be out the difference.

Another variable is your credit score.

Progressive

I did file a claim with Progessive on my previous TT when I had a tire blow out and tore apart the aluminum siding, fender and blew a huge hole in my floor.

I thought Progressive did an outstanding job of handling my claim. (Over $4,000) This happened in the spring of 2013. I took the TT to my dealer and the claims person from Progressive went to the dealer and worked with them. I did not have to be in the negotiations at all except I was able to say what I wanted replaced. Including the entire linoleum throughout the TT because I didn't want it just patched.
The dealer put a temporary patch on the hole in the floor and we used the TT all season. In October, I brought the TT back to the dealer and they fixed it and stored it for me all winter.

All in all it was a good experience with Progressive. And my decreasing deductible was $0.00 so my expense was travel and replacing the tire.

I invested in a TPMS system since.

Just remember that you also get what you pay for. Yes, some of the "big" companies are higher.

We use American Family which is pretty much only available in the mid-west. I know for fact that we pay a little bit more than we would through another company. We've had a few experiences with our vehicles the past couple of years that told me what we pay for is worth it. In all cases the ins. processed our claims without question other than needing police reports. They handled everything and all we had to do is make two calls, one to the insurance, one to make an appointment for repair at the shop of my choice. Everything was taken care of within a week or two, save for recovered deductibles, which on the last incident was because of an uninsured driver.

That said we know a few people that use discount insurance. Limited approved repair facilities available, months of waiting for repair approvals, and being told that they (the customer) has to find their own estimates and/or make a claim against the other insurance, not the one they are paying money to.

That's good news! I suspect a lot of folks end up using Progressive.

TPMS is the only way to go.

Here in Massachusetts insurance is through the roof. Especially if your zip code correlates to any of the major cities. Regulation forces the prices to be almost identical no matter who the carrier.

Here's what I pay per year for my vehicles. (#5,6 bieng the TT's) And this is with the multi vehicle discount AND perfect driving record. (liberty mutual)

Description Premium

Vehicle1: 2008 TOYO TACOMA $1,127.00 - full coverage
Vehicle2: 2014 VOLV S60 $1,525.00 - full coverage
Vehicle 3: 2004 HD FXDLI $164.00 - no collision
Vehicle 4: 2000 HD FXD $156.00 - no collision
Vehicle 5: 2005 sunn solanta $106.00 - no collision
Vehicle 6: 2016 JAYC JAY FLIGHT $898.00 - full coverage

Total Annual Premium:$3,976.00
