2007 Tahoe Tow Vehicle

Is anybody else towing with a 2007 Tahoe? I'm wondering who has found it necessary to add a transmission cooler. The '07's still have the 4-speed auto (I think 09+ has the 6-speed). Our first trip with our Jayfeather 29y was probably the most hills we will ever see - pretty much a mountain road. I towed in tow/haul mode and shifted down to third to keep from wandering between gears on the 'shallower' grades.

Overall, it seemed to go great and the highest tranny temp I saw was 201*. Average was about 185* and after a short spike it would quickly come back down. What do you guys think about these temps? From what I've read it should be just fine, but I certainly don't want to junk my tranny! It does have the built in cooler that's basically a heat exchanger in the radiator.

On a side note, we invested in the Equalizer 4-pt hitch and it's awesome! It drove like it was on rails through the very windy roads in cruddy weather. I think front to back sway would be an issue without it due to our short wheelbase but the hitch dampens it to almost nothing.

By "built in cooler" do you mean it has tranny lines that run to the radiator?

I'm no tranny expert but if it's a vehicle you will be towing with often then I would suggest installing an external cooler. They can prolong the life of the tranny substantially (something automatics almost always need). It's cheap reassurance that you're helping to keep the thing alive even if the temperature isn't something to bite your nails over. That's just my opinion, though. I've been working on cars for the past thirteen years (mostly on 1960's muscle cars and such) so almost any upgrade is worth it in my eyes.

By the way, if you are going to purchase one or still wanting some input I would strongly suggest calling Summit Racing. 9 times out of 10 you'll get someone in their tech support that can point you in the right direction.

You need a bigger transmission cooler. That will keep your transmission happy. Use it in addition to the cooler you have.
