2008 Sequoia 5.7 7mpg

287bhsw is within my towing capacity. Sequoia has towing package. Not heavily loaded, not carrying water, waste tanks empty. 115 mile round trip for first time out, not windy, central Texas. 65 mph average speed. Only got 7 mpg.
Gonna get a tuneup next week, any suggestions?

Check your air filter, make sure it's not plugged, a little dirty your computer will compensate with no problem. Replace plugs and wires if you have any wires. Check for codes, or pending codes. Your injectors could be very dirty and the spray pattern could be poor. PCV valve, clean the mas airflow sensor. Carbon buildup in the intake and combustion chamber, worse if it's direct injection. Fuel filter. Check vacuum hoses, water hoses and belts. Depending on age replace antifreeze, use distilled water. Transmission fluid and filter. Could be other things, but that's all I can think of now, check your truck maintenance schedule

We towed our (much smaller) TT with a 2010 Tundra TRD 5.7 Double cab for 7 years, and staying around 60 to 62 mph, in tow/haul mode, and keeping my foot out of the pedal, we'd average anywhere from 8.5 to 10 depending on the wind. An infrequent tail wind might get it a tad better, and I'd coast down hills whenever I could.

You can spend $1000 on a tuneup an not see a difference. Best thing you can do for your towing mileage is keep it below 62mph.

I had an 07 Tundra towing a 28’ TT. Had about the same results. My tundra had the same engine and 4.3 rear end. Not sure what the gearing is on your suv.

For sure speed is a big factor. When our routes take us on mostly interstate, trying to stay with the flow, we average 11-12 mpg. While on state routes we're usually on 14-15 mpg.

I used the same size tire and your truck in the last three gears compared to JDug66 truck your 4th gear is 37.38 mph his is 50.07 mph your 5th gear is 51.2 his is 61.06 mph your 6th gear is 63.35 mph his is 78.23 mph this is all at 2,000 rpm, your truck is running at a much higher rpm than his, that is why your gas mileage is so low

Let me recheck my gear information. I’m running about 2100 rpm’s at 62 mph

Hand calculated, about 13-14 unloaded. I have a 3” lift (purchased used) I’ll check tire size.

I didn't know what tires both of you were running so to be fair I put 27 inch tall tire for both of you to make it fair< your 60 mph and rpm won't match. I was just showing the gearing in you rear end and transmission compared to his your rpms are much higher at any given speed. Like my old Charger with a 3.23 rear end compared to a 4.10 rear end. I'm not going to hit 155 mph or even 145 with a 4.10 but I will get there faster and use a lot more fuel in everyday driving

When towing, often times the taller gears will get better mileage.

5.7 is not efficient compared to competitors towing or solo. As others have said: fuel injection service, clean air filter, plugs. Max tire pressure and most effective of all-slow down. I would bet you will pickup better than 1 mpg dropping 5 mph anticipating hills and controlled coasting downhills.

I’ll try it. I think you are right. Powerful but not efficient.

after you get done with a tune up... check your base line mileage unloaded... you will likely be around 14... when you hook up your trailer it will be around 7 give or take.. your best hope would be 8 maybe 9... but at the end of the day all the mods you have and big sail behind it will get you at best 8mpg.. it's just the way physics works...

you'll just have to eat less ThanksJB....

Bad mileage is relative, compared to unladen mpg "all", vehicles get "bad" mpg while towing. If your making a case that all gas engined vehicles towing similiar weight gets the same mpg as a 5.7 Toyota dohc engine i would disagree based on 1st hand experience.
