2012 Ford F150 Improved Payload Capacity

Check out the new payload capacity for some of the F150's. This really opens up options for trailers with these half tons. Check out the link.

Ford's weight ratings for the Screws (SuperCrews; the only truck I would consider) are wacky, to say the least. In 2011, the difference in cargo capacity between the 5.5' bed and the 6.5' bed was 20 lb. The alleged increase for 2012 is +50 lb. for the 5.5' bed and +590 lb for the 6.5' bed. What the heck is that all about? Wackier is the changes for 4x4s. In 2011, the 5.0 has a bit more cargo capacity than the 3.5 but the tow rating is dramatically less. The 6.2 has more pony power than the 3.5 or the 5.0, the same towing capacity as the 3.5, yet less cargo capacity than either of the other two engines.

Something similar happened in 2010. In 2009, Ford came out with improved engines and an all new 6 speed tranny. Towing capacity went up dramatically but cargo capacity was disappointing. In 2010, Ford increased the cargo ratings. With the new engines and improved tranny for 2011, I was hoping for something similar in 2012 but this is disappointing. It especially bites my backside (that and tall dogs) that I would have to go up from a 5.5' bed to the 6.5' bed to get the larger increase (which would be a huge benefit for me). I can easily park my 5.5' bed (even when parallel parking) but that extra foot for the 6.5' bed would seem a like a mile.

Just bought a 2011 Lariat, SCREW, 6.5 ft bed and 3.5 Ecoboost. Have not towed yet but the engine is out of this world. I can't wait to hook up the rig and see how she does. I will definitely post a report and pics.

Unbelieveable?! The payload for the 2012 F150 SCrew 6.5' box is 40lbs more than my 2011 Ram2500 CC Diesel 6.5' box. Is Dodge too conservative or is Ford over inflating their numbers.

I found the rear camera an absolute necessity. would not worry about parallel parking as long as i have the camera. just thinkin'

My 5.5' bed F150 Screw has a Leer 100R commercial cap on the bed without side windows (there are tool boxes there instead) and no rear view camera yet I can easily back her, including parallel parking, just by using the side mirrors. The only time it's a problem is when I have to angle park on a busy street. Backing out is difficult due a lack of visibilty of oncomming traffic but I still manage just fine. The reason the extra length will be a problem is getting it to fit, not visibility. Ah, the bears a girl has to cross.

Still, I plan on getting the rear view camera so hitching up to a trailer will be easier.

Look at the capacity of the reg. cab. 8ft bed. It is listed at 3060 lbs, 6.5 is 1820. How can that be right? A 150 with over 3000 lbs payload? And 1.5 ft of bed gives ya over 1000 lbs more over the 6.5ft bed? Hmmmmm.

As I mentioned in the second post in this thread, Ford's ratings are wacky.

could it be that your looking at the 36 gal fuel tank option verses the 26 gal?

In doing some research and talking around I think there have been new industry standards adopted by the truck manufactures which brought towing and cargo capacity more in line with the real world. In some cases the towing capacity of trucks dropped by **** near 1500 lbs while in others it increased dramatically. I will do some research but I think I heard about this on an F-150 forum. Also, and this may not be news to anyone but I went to plug in my TT to the new SCREW and nothing but the running lights came on. Puzzled and distressed I called Auburn RV in Auburn WA and asked what the dealeo was. Without missing a beat the tech told me to open my glove box and asked if there were two small plastic bags, which there were, and further asked if one contained two fuses, which one did. He said they would go into my under hood power box, for TT battery and TT charge. Volia! It worked. I asked why Ford didn't prep this up for me as I insisted in having max tow capability. He said they may know trucks but don't know S about TT's! LOL. Just some wisdom to share with others.

You were lucky. In the past, you had to get the fuses and a couple of relays yourself if you put in a trailer brake controller yourself. I wonder if it's because F-150s have the trailer brake controllers available as an option now?

It's hard to say what the ratings for the F-150s will be once the new standards are applied. It could be they they won't go down because Ford has added a lot of enhancements specifically for trailer towing, such as the improved tranny designed to improve both pulling power and enhanced automatic engine braking and the computerized sway control that works using the trucks brakes, etc. (I don't see it eliminating weight distributin hitches but any improvement will be welcome). Since the factory trailer brake controller works off the engine computer (and maybe a sensor on on the brake hydraulic system), it has to be a huge improvement over the after market contollers that work off sensing the truck itself slowing down. Stopping ability is as important as pulling ability.

As far as I can tell, the 26 gallon tank is the only one available on the 2x4 F-150s and the 36 gallon tanks are only available on the 4x4s. That is one of the two really stupid things Ford has done since 2008. Towing and cargo capacity has gone way up and range has decreased because the fuel tank shrunk four gallons (I suspect it was to lighten the vehicle to help meet CAFE requirements). I plan on really badgering Ford when I go to get my 2012 about putting in the 36 gallon tank since Ford's literature is contradictory. One place says the 26 gallon tank is madatory another says the 36 gallon tank is an option.

The other stupid thing Ford did was to eliminate the 6 CD changer on the lines under the Laraiat. That thing is a necessity when traveling on long trips where radio reception totally sucks. Even at home, the only two stations worth listening to are the classical music station and the NPR station. Half of the time, the classical music station is playing something I don't like. The NPR station has news and commentary during the day (which is frequently on topics I have no interest in) but plays jazz at night (borrrrring!). I wasn't impressed with Sirius satellite. I will have to check out their Sync system since it is supposed to be able to play mp3s from a USB device and is available on the XLT. I mostly play mp3s on my 6CD changer now but burning disks is a hurt in the donkey. Being able to just copy them to a USB disk would be a lot easier (and I could get way more music; I'm limited to up to 30 hours worth right now).

I would like to see a pic of the spring pack on an F150 with over 3000 lbs of payload. Many 250 and 2500`s don`t have that much.

My '08 can accomodate an mp3 player via an audio jack but not anything USB. From what I could figure out online, the Sync allows one to put mp3s on a USB stick, the idea of which I prefer to having to horse with a player. There is even an easy mod that allows one to tap into a hidden USB port and run an extension to the glove box. Being from Missouri (seriously), I would want to actually try it out before plunking down the bucks, especially since that is the only Sync feature I am interested in.

Yeah me too-- I haven't used a CD player in a long time-- It's one of the only things I'm up to date on.

Contact "TITAN TANKS" they may have an inbody tank for it... My truck came with a factory 26 gallon tank .. replaced it with their 52 gallon tank... I laugh all the way down the highway ... till I have to stop at the pumps
