2013 Ford F-150 Ecoboost
We just finished signing the papers on a new-to-us truck, a 2013 Ford F-150 Supercrew XTR Ecoboost, to replace our aging 2004 Silverado. The Silverado served us well over the time we owned it, but it was aging fast and I didn't want to put any more money into a 12 year old truck. The F-150 was a lease return to the dealer with the balance of the factory warranty, and only had 45,000 km on it. During the test drive, it felt brand new. We tend to hang on to our stuff for as long as possible, so I imagine I'll be looking for a new truck in 10 or so years.
I've always been a Chevy guy, so we'll see how Ford treats me. I've heard the Ecoboost is a towing beast, and during the test drive I had the chance to take it on the highway a bit. It felt like a V8, and hopefully it won't get the 13 mpg city the Silverado was giving me so the truck can help pay for itself in fuel savings, since this is also my daily driver. This one is rated to tow 9,600 lbs, which will easily handle our trailer with room to spare. The first test will be in a week and a half, when we're going to a campground about an hour outside the city. We have a trip planned in August that will be around 800-900 km round-trip, and I wasn't too comfortable towing the heavy Jayco with the older Silverado. I feel much better now.

NICE truck!!!! If you want to know a little about the truck's maintenance, if they took it to Ford for service, you may be able to take it to a local dealer and see if they will look up the VIN to see if it has a maintenance history. Have them also check for any computer codes while you are there..
Don
LOVE our 2012 EcoBoost, it is GREAT at towing, just hit 50K miles, replaced the tires this week.

Actually, I think it was originally leased from the same Ford dealer we bought it from, which is also walking distance from home, so I'll most likely just continue taking it there. They showed me all the records they had, and also disclosed that it was in a $3,300 accident at one time. Knowing a bit about accidents of that nature, I know that's really not a lot of damage. They gave me fair market value for my trade, which more-or-less matched what my own research told me it was worth.
DW told me I'm not allowed to spend any more money. I looked at the new trailer and new-ish truck sitting in the driveway and replied, "I don't have to, now."

Sweet looking truck! I, too, was a GM guy all my life, until 2004. That's when Toyota won me over! Good luck and happy trails!

You will certainly not starve for power with this truck. The first time I pulled my TT I felt like I could easily hit 90-95mph if I wanted to, although I would obviously never do that. Enjoy your new toy(s)

Nice truck! I have the same one, same colour, except with the 20in wheels and Max Tow. You will love it. Interior space is amazing too for family or pet hauling. Make sure you stay on top of your maintenance with that thing. Fresh oil is SO important. I chose to switch to Mobil 1 full synthetic after a few oil changes since new because of the towing demands. Also you should replace your spark plugs soon, my truck is also at 45K km and I'm doing mine shortly. These things like fresh oil and plugs and that's very important to the longevity of it. You CAN tow on 87 octane but it will make more power on less fuel if you use 91 since the computer won't have to pull back timing as much under heavy load. I run 91 all summer for towing season then switch back.
Also - no running boards? XTR package comes with chrome running boards... previous owner must have removed them.

Nice truck!
One thing to check is if the timing chain has been replaced yet. This is fresh in my mind, as mine is getting done today (coincidentally, at Mid-Town Ford also in Winnipeg). It seems to be a common problem with the EcoBoosts, where the timing chain starts to stretch.
First sign is a 1-2 second "rattle" noise on a cold start. Second sign is Check Engine light comes on, which I think is timed perfectly to happen after the warranty expires
See Ford TSB 16-0027 if you want more information.
Again, I only say this because mine is in shop now for it. This has been a GREAT TRUCK for me and tows my 28DSBH perfectly. Ford is covering the repair under the power train warranty.

Great tip re: fuel & octane level.
I'm going to try that this summer!

^ True about the timing chain, although they made some changes to the EcoBoost for '13 and I haven't heard of many chain rattles in the 13+ years.

Yeah, I should've added that it's about a $3000 repair, which is also why I mentioned it.

You'll love the truck. Mine's a year older, tricked out with the Max tow and the HD Payload package. That said, average around town is about 17.5 to 18.5. Winter daily driving dropped it to 15 to 16 (due to prolonged warm up times in our frozen climate). Highway around 20. Yours probably will be better as I have the high gear transmission.
Towing the 8,000lb fifth wheel it runs about 10.5. The 3500 lb boat, around 16.5. I can easily pass semi's going up a 6% grade with the 5th.
I've found going up to premium doesn't quite get the 10% increase in milage the manual suggests. That said, if the price of premium is less than 10% of regular, and looks to be steady for a while, I'll move up. Will also use it when towing on longer trips, just to get the increase in mileage between fill ups.

2013 Ford F-150 Ecoboost
Was a GM guy for 20 years and now we have a '13 F150 Eco FX4. Awesome towing machine. Pulls our 26RKS weighing in a little over 7k with room to spare. Plenty of power. The one thing I did do was replace the P rated tires with LT, it helped with the jello feeling which may have been due (in part) to the off-road package.

Haven't seen a ton of the chain slap issues here. As a matter of fact, we don't even stock parts for the TSB anymore. Pretty much was VCT replacements (intake & exhaust), bunch of different gaskets and the primary chain. Again, doing a history search shows we haven't done one in a while. The TSB pays between 9.0-9.2 hours. So that tells me it required taking the front cover off (just like the 5.4L).

Thanks for the tips everyone. Yes this did originally come with running boards but the dealer said they were pretty badly dinged up by the previous owner, so they took them off and put side steps on. I'm fine with that, just as long as there's something. DW is a little vertically challenged and my mom is in her 70's, so they both need a little help climbing in. I'm still learning about this truck and reading everything I can find on it.

What's even more interesting about this truck is that it's never towed a trailer. The paint around the receiver is pristine, and the trailer battery charge relay and fuse are still in the little baggie in the glove compartment. A quick look at the owner's manual showed me where they go.

Very nice truck, congratulations. Really miss my F150 ecoboost as a daily driver, that engine just goes and goes. You will be impressed towing over hills with all that torque.

Ford has a website I think is called Myford. You can log your truck in and see its history and other useful info. I love my 13 F150 Ecoboost. Its a good solid truck!
