Question 2017 Silverado 1500???

I am looking for a truck to tow my new Jayco HT 27.5 RLTS. I have been looking at 3/4 tons, but I understand that the 2017 Silverado has a stronger engine. I am full timing and I tend to stay in one place for a couple of months, so I need something to tow from point A to point B safely, and to serve as my get about town and explore the countryside vehicle. I would love the higher MPG of the 1500. What do you all think? Is it strong enough for my needs? Thanks!

If your looking newer consider the F150 especially with the ecoboost. F150 has the best 1/2 ton pay load capacity with their lighter aluminum body.

At 8,000 lbs dry, that seems like a very heavy 5er for a 1500. The newer 6.2 will probably do well but the softer suspension and lower braking capacity will be put to the test.

I agree....., and with a conservative loaded weight of 9,000lbs one would be looking at a loaded pin weight in the 1,800lbs - 2,250lbs (20% - 25%) range. With a GVWR of 9,950lbs there's still more cargo room.

Plus the 8,000lbs is the published UVW......, as-shipped UVW will be a little heavier.

Thankful for the advice but still confused

I appreciate everybody's advice. I have to admit though I'm more confused than ever. The half tons seem to be just a bit too light-weight, but the three-quarter tons seem like maybe they're physically too big for the HT. I also hate the mpg of the three-quarter tons. Maybe I should think about a trailer, though I've been told they're harder to drive. This will be my full-time home so it's important that I get it right .

If I got the Ford F-150 3.5L ecoboost with the Max Trailer Tow package and the Heavy-Duty Payload Package would that possibly work for the ht 27.5?

jfreeland518, I'm surprised no one has chimned in to point out the issues with most (if not all) 1/2 ton trucks. The problem is the cargo carrying capacity. A sticker is on the driver side door jam that will give you the max CCC of the vehicle. My Silverado 2500HD states 2728 lbs. That's the total payload capacity.

Keep in mind the payload includes the pin box weight, 5th wheel hitch weight, people and stuff in the cab, gasoline, and additional weight incurred to the pin box with a loaded 5th wheel.

With that being said, the vehicle will "pull" the 5th wheel you're describing, probably without issue. However, the manufacturer has stated CCC to protect themselves from liabilities associated with overloading the suspension components of the vehicle.
