2020 GM HD’s vs 2019

So yesterday I got a wild hair and went to the dealer to checkout left over ‘19 3500 SRW’s. This led to me looking at ‘20 2500’s. Payload on a nicely outfitted diesel 2500 LT was 3300lbs. Impressive. All I really wanted was leather to help with having a shedding dog and the L5P. The ‘20 2500 LT and ‘19 3500 high country are the same price. Liked the 20 better. Actually considered making a deal only to realize no one makes a fifth wheel rail set as of yet. So, if you shop the newer Chevys and have a FW hitch on rails you’re out of luck for now. Or spend a bunch of money for a turn over ball and in my case a whole new hitch. I’m sure it’ll change soon.

On a side note, that LP5 with the 10 speed Allison is fun. Fun is the best way I can think the describe it.

Awesome, now you know that if you look to long you just might walk away with a new truck, it seem like I ran across this in another forum about the same thing, I think that he was looking or asking about a adapter but not sure .

What is the payload of the '19 3500?

Congratulations on the new truck. Pictures are required!
These new payload numbers are amazing. I'm still not sure why they jumped up so much?

Enjoy!

Totally agree with the newer trucks are better. Ford put the alumminum box in thier line up and now the old rails will not fit nor will the 5r style tail gates change over to the aluminum box. Nothing gets cheaper...

I thought the big difference in a single rear wheel truck was pay load capacity. I'm a Ford man and the difference in aa F-250 6.7 and a F-350, is the over load springs. This contributes to the increase cargo capabilities. The F-350 has a over the axle over load leaf, and II had to "stiffen the rear". After my NP purchased I ran down to the Truck axle shop and had extra leaf and Timbrens installed. Major difference !!

What has the Chevy got under the rear of that SWR 3500 that the 2500 doesn't have?

I think the payload on the 19 3500 I looked at was around 3600 lbs.

For the 19 and previous chevy’s, the only difference in diesel single rear wheel is the overload spring on the top side of the axle. All else the same. SRW 3500 19 and previous have a GVWR of 11500. Where as the 2500 as we all know is 10K. All due to the overload spring. I have Sumos on my current 2016 2500 and it does great. Overload spring vs Sumos....not sure which would be a better ride in my situation. Looking at the overloads, they wouldn’t engage as early as my Sumos do. May actually lead to more body roll, and bounce loaded with the fifth wheel vs my 2500. I only zeroed in on the 3500, because I figured if starting over, might as well go 1 ton. Not sure though if it would actually be better towing. New engine aside. More torque there. A little at least. Most importantly, no CP4 fuel pump.

As for the 2020. It’s a total redo. Not sure how they got the 2500 3/4 ton up to an 11350 GWVR. Same ride as my 2016 2500. No overload spring over the axle and same number of springs. It does have a different frame for 2020, 10 speed trans, and some different bearings etc. I suspect the rear suspension is the same. Tires and wheels are the same. Kind of confirms that the 10K on previous 3/4 tons really is an arbitrary number. Also, some research showed people still had to bag the new 2500 when towing heavy to level it out.

Ultimately, if I get an L5P Duramax it’ll probably be a left over 19 3500 SRW standard bed if I find one. That’s what’ll fit in my garage, and my floor mats, bed cover, Sumo’s and hitch rails can transfer over. The new 2500’s are 10 inches longer. Yes, it’s that tight a fit in my garage. A little taller and hair wider as well. But, they are indeed very nice.

No new truck yet. Or maybe at all. The new numbers are impressive on paper(sticker).

Man I've got to stop speed-reading!

Yes these new trucks are amazing. Maybe I'll be in the market in a couple of years.

Good luck with your decision.

Cheers

I looked at a 2020 GMC 2500 when shopping recently, there were no 2019's I liked so I did not bother with them. The dealership had marked up the price by $5000 so I walked away, was not going to look at the Chevy dealer. I did like the higher payload numbers for the 2500 on the GM products quite impressive. It is really hard to go wrong with any of the big 3 these days.

Dealers that add a side sticker price are asking for the sky, moon and the stars. I do respect the ones that are honest as the sticker states, "Added Dealer Markup".

When you see a commercial offering a stupid rebate of $4000.00, no interest for 72 months and other incentives, you can be sure the manufacturer has a back log of new vehicles.

The GMC and Chevy dealers are going to be a bit short of supply after the GM strike, so the dealers aren't afraid to mark things up now and take advantage of the "Must have it now" customers.

Well, I went back today. Actually just to get my recall done. Line for service was long so I went to look at the ‘19 1 ton again. It’s the only one of the big three that’ll fit my garage. Also, I can transfer over all my stuff. Floor mats, sumos, bed cover and hitch. Got it for the same as the discounted 2020 2500 I was pondering. Also got a good trade offer.

Oh yeah, now that does look good and if everything is working together like you said if that were me I would be all over this. I bought a leftover 2018 3500 with only 19 miles on it and is very happy. I didn't care about the new ones have a little more hp and tq, as long I was in a better position towing my heavy and long 5th wheel I was okay with it.

I mean you know if you can do it or not now but if this were me I will pull the trigger, good luck.

Congrats on the new truck. Black trucks are awesome. I think that was Chevy's best looking front end in quite awhile.

Thanks. First thing I’ve learned is my shocks on the previous truck with 40K miles were shot. I didn’t even realize it because it was a slow progression. This 1 ton rides much better than my 2500 did. With this one I’ll budget for Bilstein’s around the 40k mark. Next week I’ll get some rails put in so I can drag the trailer in for some warranty work. I really don’t think I’ll see any difference there outside of it being a 40k newer suspension. On paper It’ll look better as far as payload go’s, but I think my 2500 was fine there even though I was over.

Congratulations on the new ride!. It's a great looking rig.

I'm a huge fan of Bilstein shocks. They are factory on Tundra's TRD option. I haven't had to replace a shock in 15 years. My 2004 was traded with 150,000 on the ODO, and my current TRD has 131,000 on it now. They're really bulletproof.

I’ve never replaced a shock on anything. But apparently the stock Ranchos on my 2500 we’re all and show and little go. Or thousands of towing miles fatigued them sooner. This one doesn’t have those, but I’m certain they’re nothing that’ll last much further.

I replaced the factory Ranchos on my '17 F-250 with only 15K on the truck.
