As a side note, I recently saw a video where someone had the new 2020 2500HD crew cab standard bed with the 6.6L gasser in it yanking around 12K of trailer and track loader around the high country in Oregon. Was a marked improvement over the 6.0L gasser. 401 HP (5200 RPM) and 464 lb torque (4000 RPM).

What they stated was they paid roughly $40K for it. That probably seems in the ballpark. That pickup will put any 1500, diesel or gas, to shame in payload and tow ratings. If one pays even close to the $40K or more for a 1500, they are really throwing money away.

Looks like CC is only around 500# more for the 3500HD than the 2500HD. Almost to the point of being insignificant.

I really don’t concern myself with what rebates are going on or who gets them. My focus is a minimum of 20% off of MSRP. Every vehicle I have purchased new in the last 30 years, a minimum of 20% off MSRP. I really don’t care how the dealer makes that work. My 2015 2500HD 6.0 MSRP was $48K. Bought it new for $38K. Just over 20% off. Same for a 2006 Jeep Liberty, my previous ‘98 2500 454, and wife’s 2017 Equinox.

Saw where someone got one of the first 2020 2500HD 6.6 for roughly $40K. It had a sticker of $48K. So I know that negotiation can be done.

I am sure that the 6.6 will be a great motor, especially after a few production years roll by. I just took advantage of the hype around the new trucks pouring onto the lots and got myself a new '19 with the 6.0 for a ridiculous deal. I have owned two Vortec motors already and not one issue. I am very happy with the purchase, and when I am ready for another one the L8T will be well tested and most likely putting out even better numbers than it does now.

edit...not to mention it will likely be paired to a ten speed by the time I buy one

Curious to know if anyone here pulled the trigger on the 6.6 Vortec yet? Found a nice deal on one but wanted to get some reviews being the first year in production and all

I have a 2020 GMC Sierra with the 6.6 gas. I have about 6500 miles on it so far and am very happy with it. It’s a substantial upgrade from my 2016 2500 with the 6.0. This engine is really smooth and has noticeably improved low and mid range torque and the transmission shifts perfectly!

I haven’t towed with it yet and am coming from a 2018 3500 Duramax so we’ll see how well it handles my 12,000 lbs 5th wheel this summer. I’m curious to know if anyone has towed with theirs and how it does with the load?

As far as mpg I would say it’s probably getting 1 mpg better than my 6.0. So, it’s a bigger truck, bigger engine, more power and a little better mpg. Not bad! Also, my payload is just shy of 3500lbs for a 2500!!

Agree with "videoguy" on comparison summary v. 16' gasser. The single biggest improvement is payload increase. I wouldve gotten a 3500 if the payload had not increased so much for the 2500. Contrasting the towing experience, I don't feel a significant difference. But I am very happy my rig as towed, now falls within my payload capacity. I wish this truck had a 4.10 dif. option to maximize the power advantage the 6.6 has to offer while towing. I could live with the same mpg as old truck for the significant boost the 4:10 would've provided. The 3.73's still offer a towing improvement due to increased engine performance but is not the best ratio to maximize towing performance. Everything is a bit of a compromise I understand that but give us the option.

Agreed. 4.10s would be ideal!

Got the new Chevy 2500 6.6L gasser

Saw the post and thought I would add a comment. Got the new Chevy 2020 2500 HD with the 6.6L gasser. Just made our first trip pulling our 28RL White Hawk. Although this is a relatively light trailer, guessing no more than 8000# loaded, this truck is a marked improvement over my 2018 Tundra.

Just set the cruise control and let it go. Pulled grades in the Texas Hill Country with ease. Very little downshifting. Gas milage around 10 mpg, but the truck doesn’t have 2000 miles on it yet so it should get a bit better. The factory tow package has some neat bells and whistles. Factor brake controller worked really well.

I could never say with any rig that it felt like no trailer was back there, it I can say this truck pulls my rig with ease and has much room to spare.

Great, thank you - I think this is where I am leaning now. Were you running your rig with a WDH or not?

Running with WDH

I am running with a Husky Centerline WDH. Got just a little squat on the rear when dropping the trailer on, but spring tension on the hitch took care if that. No sway whatsoever and I pulled in a pretty good wind. Also did some miles down interstate and had no sway when big rigs passed.

To be honest, I fought the idea of needing to go to 3/4 for a long time. My Tundra pulled the TT ok, but there is just no comparison. The 3/4 is so much better all around as a tow vehicle compared to the 1/2.

Let us know where you land.

Anyone towing a fiver with a new 2020 gm truck and the Andersen hitch?
I’ve heard rumors that the goose neck hitch was set back farther towards the tailgate, but they did make the bed longer by 4”, but the trailer hitch will still hit the tailgate with the Andersen. Also is the bed deeper in the 2020’s? I was at the dealer but I forgot to take some measurements. Thanks

Ringnecks,

They did move the fifth wheel hitch point back some and did increase the length of the bed. The 2020’s sit higher too but they lowered the bed rails to maintain clearance so that should remain the same from previous gen trucks. The nice thing about the hitch being further back, at least with a standard 5th wheel hitch, is that it allows for more cab clearance when towing a 5er. I have not towed with mine yet...still snow here.

As far as be height, it seems a little higher but I am not sure and not longer have my 2018 to compare it too.
