32BHDS Tow Vehicle

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum, and looking at purchasing the 32BHDS. Currently I have a 2010 F150 Screw Lariat 4X4 with 3.55 axle ratio and integrated ford tow package. Truck is rated at towing 9600lbs. I am pretty sure I wont be doing much dry camping, so I most likely will not be towing with the TT loaded with water.

I was wondering if anyone else is towing this trailer with a F150 and how it pulls?

I just looked at the specs, assuming you are thinking the Jayflight 32BHDS.

I would be concerned with GVWR, rear axle rating, and payload. I expect you will at maximum or maybe even over on rear axle rating and payload even with the trailer dry. I never travel with water in the tanks, but there is a big pile of other stuff.

I have a little smaller trailer but went the 3/4 ton truck route - easier to pull, easier to brake, no payload issues. Truck is not working at full capacity, which your 1/2 ton will be.

A lot depends on what you want to do - drive an hour to tour favorite campground or take a 6,000 mile trip? If short, local distance I don't see a real need to change trucks. I would go to 3/4 ton for a 6,000 mile trip.

Appears possible, but you'll have to hit the scales and check everything carefully.

I live in Maryland, and my family has a membership to a campground in Gettysburg, which is about 70 miles away, that would most likely be about 75% of the trips we would take right now. Down the road I will be upgrading to a F250 6.7 Diesel. I was more concerned about right now since I found a great deal on the trailer that has pretty much everything we are looking for. I would say the farthest trip that we would most likely take, would be probably 400 miles one way or so.

Not even close, a 32BHDS is much to heavy for a 150/1500 class truck....even without your family in the truck or stuff in the trailer.

JRutledge,

Welcome to JOF

If your objective is tow the 32BHDS within your TV's specified weight limits/capabilities, then the distance of the trip is moot.

As mentioned, TV Payload Capacity is important because the TT's "loaded" tongue weight is subtracted from the TV's available payload capacity.

I would take your F-150 to a CAT scale under "loaded" (full fuel, passengers, cargo) conditions and weigh it (simple process & about $9). Subtract the CAT scale weight from your F-150's GVWR noted on your driver's door, the remaining weight is the available payload capacity for your TT's loaded tongue weight and any other TV weight not accounted for at the CAT scale weigh-in.

Unfortunately folks find that most 1/2 ton payload capacities fall short when it comes to towing heavy TT's.

Here is another recent F-150 & 32BHDS thread that may be helpful:

I don't think I'd go far with our 32BHDS towed to our F150. We tow with a 3/4 ton or sometimes our F550 Diesel. Do you currently have a TT? By the time we pack up our truck and TT, who knows how much it weighs, but it adds up quick.

I have a similar TT to yours, a 32TSBH. I was looking at new trucks, don't think I am going to get one, anyways, from what I researched, I would require a 3/4 ton for me. Guess it can wait while. Keep mine stored at the campground.

I have a 2012 32BHDS and the dry weight is 10600 lbs. I pull it with a 2011 F250 6.7 with no problems, but I don't think I would attempt it with a 1/2 ton truck.

I will have to go to the scale and weigh my truck, and take into account that I will be adding weight of cargo and stuff, and the dry weight of the trailer at the dealer is 8162lbs, and I know that the GCW for my truck is 16000lbs, but I will be keeping an eye out to upgrade to a F250 or F350.

I had a 2004 Jayco JayFlight 29 BHS we tried to pull it behind a 1999 Dodge ram club cab 1500 with a 5.9L v8. By the second trip out we realized it would not work and unsafe. I tried to fix the problem by adding Timberen helper springs, Rancho 9000 shocks, and E rated tires. It did not help even though we were able to keep it under the tow rating with my 1200# tongue weight we were over on payload. The truck was working too hard. We upgraded to a Silverado 3500 and it worked well.

I own a 334RBTS which weights close to the max 10,500 gvw. I couldn't imagine towing it with an F150. I bought the F250 6.7 diesel before the 334RBTS, horse before the cart. Even with my F250 which is single rear wheel has all it can handle on windy days. Think my set up is better suited for a dully. I know it's tempting with the great deals out there and the 32 is a great choice but I would check out a heavier TV.

I towed my 32BHDS a couple times with a 2014 Sierra half-ton last year. It was only me, and I was forbidden from letting my wife drive my truck to use hers. (Furthest was 50 miles) I was alone in the truck, that had 1600lbs payload. I was at max. It worked. Much easier with a three-quarter ton.

So I bought the trailer and I am currently using my F-150 to tow it. I bought the trailer in PA near Hagerstown, MD, and towed it back to Baltimore. Those of you that are not familiar with I-70, there are 2 mountains to climb on the way back, truck did great towing it, 2800RPMs up the mountain doing a steady 60mph. I also went to the CAT scale and weighed my truck and it with a truck load of people, trailer not loaded, my rear axle was right about its rating, and my GCW was about 500lbs under my max, so I will probably be overweight when all is said and done. I know before everyone starts knocking me for that, I am not that worried about it right now, truck pulls and stops with no issues. I am going to in the next 2 years move up to a diesel though.

That's great that you took the time to run across a CAT scale, most don't. At least you know where you stand with your TV/TT combination under the present conditions..., and it may influence how you load the TT going forward.

Once you have your TV/TT combination under loaded conditions, here is a TV/TT CAT scale 'how-to' that will confirm your WDH adjustment and confirm all your weights:

Enjoy the new TT and travel safe.

We got our 32BHDS last March. We pulled it with a 2012 Chevrolet 1500 4x4 Z71. We pulled it to the Canyon Lake (60miles) and once to the coast (230 miles). What we had to do was pack very lightly as to not overload the truck. Even then we were getting 5-8 mpg. And it pulled like a truck loaded with wet dirt. At times it seems like the front wheels were barely one the ground. I love my Silverado, but I'm in the process of upgrading to a 2500HD duramax diesel. I hated to but the safety of my family is most important. In summary yes you can pull a 32BHDS with a 1500, but you need to leave most everything at home and pull the trailer almost empty. For short trips you should be okay but go slow. One other thing, the 1500 will not do well in rainy weather
