3500 Dually, Aisin, 3.73 gear ratio, mega cab (short bed) pulling 18K?

Hi all,

Was about to pull the trigger on special order Designer 42.5' length with 18K ccc. Was planning on getting a Ram 3500 Dually, Aisin, 4.10 gear ratio, long bed. Decided to measure the garage depth and of course it won't fit. Only need a couple more inches. Insert joke here.

I was really set on the full 8' bed but what you going to do. I was thinking after market bumber swapout but with park assist sensors in bumpers it might be a hassle.

So I guess one option is a 3500 Dually, Aisin, mega cab (short bed) with slider and 4.10 trans. EDIT playing around on the Ram web site and it appears 4.10 gear is available

Anyone see this as a problem?

No problem at all! Bookemdanno has a similar truck pulling a north point 377. Can't speak for him but I'm pretty sure he loves it but I'd bet he wishes he had the aisin and 4.10

I've got the Mega-Cab dually with the 4.10 rear. I wanted the Aisin, but couldn't find one locally and didn't want to wait on an order (nor pay the prices). I got a left over '16 about 2 months ago and got $19k off the MSRP. I actually lowered my car payment by getting a bigger truck. Check the measurements on the mega cab too...it's pretty darn long. I can only fit mine in the garage because I have a tandem set up in mine. I absolutely love the truck and pulling the 377 is fantastic! I had a 2500 prior to the 3500 and I have the B&W manual slider. I've used the slider 4 times in the last year...3 times to test it and 1 time just because I wasn't sure I'd make the turn (better to be safe than sorry).

Thanks for the info. Hard to pass on 19k off MSRP! I may be waiting until after 4th of July for Designer build so will probably get the Aisin.

Looks like CC with 8' box is 259.4 and mega cab short box is 248.4 which gives me the room I need.

I can tell you I'm pulling around 13000 with a 3500 SRW CC, 6.7 Cummins, Aisin, and a 3.42 and barely know it's back there. I'm also using a B&W Companion drop in with a Reese Airborne sidewinder and can do 90degree turns all day long if I need to.

I thought the mega cab with the short bed was the same length as the crew cab with the long bed? Have you checked out the crew cab with the short bed? I've recently been corrected on here that you can order the crew cab dually short bed. My crew cab has a TON of room in the back seat, so unless you're needing the storage behind the back seats, maybe the crew cab short bed dually would work for you.

Sorry, just saw your posted numbers. The one thing I miss with my 2500 short bed is the tighter turning radius. While I think it's only a few feet different in the radius, I find backing a 42' long fifth wheel into some of the tight spots with the long bed to be quite a challenge!

You'll love the power of the CTD, and wish the Aisin was available when I placed my order!

The CC short bed does not have DRW option which I need for payload.

I got called out on this the other night on one of these threads, as it wasn't available when I had mine built. Sure enough, when I checked into it, it was available to order! Just to be sure, I just now checked the website, and it let me build a 3500 DRW CC short bed 4X4, with the Cummins/Aisin/Airbags.

If you can order that truck, and I think it depends on parts inventory as to what it lets you select as options, you'll absolutely love it!

You know what, I just went back to check again, and now its not there as an option, so either my computer or their website is messed up. Now I'm on a mission to figure this out... If it'll come back up with my configuration, I'll grab a screen shot and post it, for nothing else than to save my sanity on this! lol

Only issue is that you are going to have to invest more into your hitch setup. Other than that you will have no issue with power to pull that rig.

Have you thought about moving your garage wall? I had the same problem, and opened up my wall just to see what I was dealing with. Turned out, when they built the house, they left about a 3" space between the studs on the family room side and the studs on the garage side. I ended up just building a new wall inside that gap, then took down the old one, and voila, 3" longer garage.

Thanks for suggestion. I did think about moving the wall but I know it's a 3.50 wall plus drywall. Unfortunately we recently finished it into a nice mud room with built in bench seat that would have to be moved. I also thought about moving garage door out a little bit but just not enough room.

Last night we did test drive a full bed truck to verify it wouldn't fit and it's 3 inches to long. I was also worried about height but cab is a couple inches shorter than listed. The radio antenna is the tallest point and does have to bend a bit to fit.

I guess I consider the mega cab with slider. Only downside is future weight restrictions on slider as is seems 20,000 may be the max?

I bought a 25k non-sliding hitch as a "just-in-case", but then my missus ruled out any future truck upgrades...

Thanks for superglide suggestion.

Doing a little research on Superglide and I like the simplicity. I would need a Ram picture frame adapter as Pullrite does not make a Ram OEM version that fits Ram puck system.

A little concerned all this adds height to pin.

I am considering air suspension in Ram truck could help a bit.

I have the picture frame mounted in my bed and the height is ok. I'm 4" front to back on the fifth wheel. As you can see no biggee. 18k pull rite slider.

Didn't know where exactly to put this...so I'm putting it in this thread!
Pretty good article comparing the 2 transmission offerings from Ram.

We bought an 06 Ram 3500 4x4 new 4.10 axle and auto trans. If we had it to do over the 3.73 and two wheel drive would work fine.Mainly just better gas mileage.Just turned 150k replacing injectors next week.Only add on's Jake Brake, and air bags Great tow vehicle we mainly tow in the mountains and now have 16 Eagle.Happy Trails
