So, I have had a Tundra, which we used to tow our 24ft fiver, and our current rig. My main question is how do you use your truck? Is it a daily driver with some towing a few weekends a year? Or do you take longer trips with it? Over 10k mi of towing a year?
If it is a daily driver with less towing then I'd stick with a 1/2T. Why? They are much more comfortable when not towing. I'd love to have the ride of my old Tundra back. It was smooth. 3/4T and 1T trucks ride like trucks (except maybe the new RAM air suspensions). When not loaded they are harsh.
Diesel vs gas. While I love the pulling power of my diesel it has several downsides. Maintenance costs. They need a LOT of oil at changes. About every third service it took over $500 to get it out of the shop. Then there is the issue of the turbos. They are designed to be run for long hours at load. They are NOT designed for running errands around town, stopping and starting every hour or two.
Mine now has a new turbo (117k miles) and should be good for another >100k miles. Dodge's especially have had a history of problems with turbos due to the VGT type engine brake and boost control, combined with their emissions control design.
So, if it were me, I'd probably be looking at a new 1/2T first and see if I could make it work.
