Allison tranny problem
Our 05 GMC 3500 diesel has developed a tranny problem- The transmission will downshift and lock up in the gear the tranny selects- I must stop the vehicle and shut the engine off to get the tranny to operate properly- Of course , the "check engine " light comes on and stays on- It has been "repaired" 3 times so far-Any one out there who can shed some light on a solution? THANX in advance for your opinions- DD

Do you belong to Diesel Place? You will probably get the answer pretty fast since there are numerous Alllison experts on the forum.

Sounds like one I worked on back when those first came out. Back then, allison wouldn't allow us (GMC dealer) do anything more than filters and flashes. I ended up replacing the trans in the end... Good luck

My old truck had the same thing happen, it ended up being a sensor or something. I can't remember exactly what it was but it was a sensor that counts teeth? or something haha dang CRS. It had to do with rpms and the computer would not count it right and go into limp mode type of thing.
Took me forever to fix it but my neighbor worked on school buses fixed it eventually.

My 06 had a similar experience - stick solenoid was the prob and taken care of by the dealer. Head on over to dieselplace.com and do some reading in the trans section. If your close to Western Michigan, Merchant Automotive will have your answer and the right stuff to make an Allison even more bullet proof

I'm on my 4th D-max/Ally and have not had any issues, hopefully a simple/inexpensive fix. Either of the forums listed below are equally informative as this one when it comes to all things Duramax.

Good Luck!

My work truck had that happen, it went on for a long time before we sent it in. They replaced the transmission but it was still under warranty. I had to drive a smart car while it was in the shop. My back still hurts lol.

I didn't have that exact thing happen but the NSBU switch can cause some weird things. It gets corroded and strange things happen

Did you ever have the codes checked? If it throws a light it will store a code. You may have to go to the dealer though.

My mechanic has come out of retirement to research the problem- A speed sensor was replaced in Omaha on our way to Iowa but that didn't do it- It appears there are 2 speed sensors and the wrong one was replaced- I will post when I have more info- DD

Took the TV to the local tranny shop who was recommended to me by a trusted mechanic- He did some testing which revealed nothing so he replaced a speed sensor which had not been replaced earlier- He said it was a shot in the dark but he scored a bullseye- I suspect he really had at least a good hunch- I have tried to force the Allison to repeat the failure but have been unsuccessful- If you have this problem in the future, remember to have the speed sensors replaced in tandem rather than individually- JMHO- DD
