Am i overthinking this? Tow vehicle for 184bh
Think i might be overthinking this a bit. When i bought my 184bh my 4runner did ok but on he highway it struggled to keep 60 mph. I new this was a possibility due to the age of the truck so i started looking for a new to tow vehicle. Tried a v8 4runner and it did well and then reading more and more i looked at some half ton trucks. I would like to use a fj cruiser if it would work out and found many people pulling this with vehicles that are alot smaller that the fj . I hate to get more tow vehicle than i really need.

I just bought a 184bh and took it out for the first time this weekend. Towed it with a Tacoma and I was impressed with how well the tacoma handled the camper. Horse power was never a issue, the tacoma really is suited well for this size of a camper.

Did you get it on the interstate? if so how did it do. I have considered the tacoma as well. any sway?

The wheelbase on an FJ is pretty short, 105.9 inches

yeah know just a few inches shorter than the 4runners. some of the others i have seen recently pulling this trailer are using small suvs . pretty sure my 4runner would be fine if it wasnt worn out. really only had issues with drag on interstate.

I did tow it on the hwy and in a couple of areas I did face some fairly steep inclines. The Tacoma handled it all well...hwy speed limit was 70 and I stayed between 65 and 70 without any problems. On a couple of the steeper sections of the hwy it did take some acceleration but nothing that made me feel like the truck was struggling. I was worried about the Tacoma's towing ability but after this trip I feel much better about using it as my primary tow vehicle for the camper.

You can NEVER have too much truck. First time a semi cuts you off on the interstate you will know what I mean. You also want to avoid short wheelbase vehicles so the trailer cannot "steer" the truck.

You might also consider those double/crew cab 1/2 ton pickups and see what's out there to fit your needs. If you are pulling a TT, you could put a topper on the truck and have a ton of storage as well as seating for up to six people, assuming they aren't too big.

My only advice when shopping for a TV is consider your next trailer purchase. You may be happy with the 184 forever, but my personal experience (and many others too) is something will happen and you'll want to change TT at some point. I doubt you will want to change TV then too.

+1. Buy more truck than you need now, and you'll be better off later.
I saw someone picking up a small Jayco (didn't catch the model but I'm pretty sure it was a 184 BH) with a Tacoma yesterday. There was no WDH on it, and the Taco truck was sagging in the rear pretty severely for such a small trailer... I have no doubt the Taco is enough truck, but the stock rear suspension may be a little soft.

I've been towing my 184bh with a '07 Tacoma, crew cab, long bed. Its pretty much a completely stock truck. Toyota rates it to tow up to 6500lbs. Currently I am only using a sway controller and brake controller (No Weight Dist Hitch) and have not had any problem with the truck sagging. I have taken it on several highways and into the Pocono Mtns. The Tacoma did a good job with just a little loss of horsepower in the mountains but not enough to raise any concerns. That said if you get a Tacoma to tow the 184bh I would recommend the crew cab long bed and a set of replacement (towing) mirrors, brake controller and a WDH.

It's natural to think long and hard about your TT/TV combination, but the best time is before you make a purchase. With that said, your current setup will handle most short haul or occasional longer haul trips unless you live where the mountains are a factor. When you get around to upgrading the TV, I'd look to a 1/2 ton and although I'm a chevy guy, the Ford ecoboost is getting a lot of attention.
