Our 5th is 39’ with a GVW of 12,700# with 3k# of that on the pin. I picked a diesel (love it), SWB (longer would have been better but it’s ok), 2WD (just didn’t feel 4WD was necessary). If you get a 5th much heavier (loaded) than around 14k# it’s my opinion you’re in dually country.
The diesel is excellent even tho it bumped the price quite a bit, again my opinion around 9k# the diesel will really prove itself.
We towed our 1st TT (5k#) with a 5.4 gasser (03 Expedition) and saw mpg in the 9’s, the 350 tows almost 13k# and delivers mpg in the 12’s. Only 3 mpg difference was nice but didn’t impress me until I realized that’s a 30% improvement ! Will i recover the price of the diesel? No, but it is an awesome TV.

Our current TV is a 2016 f150, 5.0, with a payload of 2157. With that Ford we drag a 23BHM (GVWR 6250) around Pennsylvania. The set-up does just fine, but still I get just a tiny bit nervous sometimes on longer pulls. I don't know why that is, it just is. There's no sway, the Ford doesn't struggle, but I find myself haunting the local dealership every now and then ogling f250's and even the 350's. I guess I read too many posts on here.

Being as how the truck we have is only a year-and-a-half old and has just 7500 miles on it I was not hot to have my wife find out I've been seeing other trucks, but last night I decided to come clean. To my surprise-actually-not-surprise she's all aboard and even made noises about a bigger trailer.

I'm thinking we will end up maybe next year or the year after with a small FW or trailer with a GVWR of 9000 or maybe 10,000 pounds - perhaps a 28BHBE or something. Never having had one would we be OK with a 250, or should I scour around for a 350? It will be a 6.2 because we're already taking a hot-enough bath on the 150, and it will surely have 3.73 gearing unless I miraculously stumble into a 4.30. I will do my due diligence hunting payload.

I'm asking folks that have experience with one or the other truck for your recommendation, and also folks who have stepped up from a 150 to a 250 or 350 for your experiences - is there an appreciable difference? I'll hang up and listen.
We hope our similar circumstance helps in your decision.

We had a 2017 F150 Lariat 3.5 ecoboost pulling a White Hawk 27DSRL (7500 lb GVWR). We would feel the trucks as they passed but not too bad. We did feel the Midwest crosswinds and adjusted our departures to try and avoid them. We had P rated tires and not the LT which would have made some difference. We felt like we needed a little more stability and at some point thought about an upgrade to a larger camper. We had less than 10,000 miles on the F150 (useful load 1825 lbs) when we traded it for a 2017 F250, 6.2 gasser, 3.73’s (3000 lb useful load) and never looked back. We did take a minor hit on the trade but our dealer was pretty good as we have done business there many times. We traded the 27DSRL in on a 2018 28.5 RSTS Eagle HT (10,000 GVWR). We couldn’t be happier with our combination. We’ve pulled it in strong crosswinds with no worries and do not feel any effects of passing trucks. We just sit back and relax now. The F250 does a great job even through the TN hills. We were able to maintain highway speed. Our last trip was 2000 miles round trip and averaged 9 mph. JMHO.

Newer diesels with the emissions still in place are not much louder than any current pickup and mine doesn't stink at all. She is seeing those guys that do the emissions delete and have them tuned up to sound like a jet engine rolling coal, those are just plain silly IMO.

I went with a 250, but wish I had just gone with a 350. My trailer is heavy (10,200 GVWR) and a bumper pull at that. I added Sumo Springs to the rear and that made a world of difference in the ride characteristics. I still have to keep it under 65 or it starts to sway, but I went with the diesel and my available payload is paltry (1750 lbs). I am still way under on my rear axle rating so I won't be too terribly concerned when I go to look at trading to a 5er when I don't need the bunks for my kids anymore.

Ha, ha...my wife's only concern with respect to a truck was whether or not it could pull the trailer she wanted. Unfortunately for me that truck was also going to be my daily drive. In NY anything over 6,000 lbs is considered a commercial vehicle whether it's used commercially or not and cannot be driven on parkways. Since 90% of my commuting is on parkways (major hassle getting to an from work not using them) I really was trying to avoid going passed that 6,000 lbs mark. You can get around this by adding seat attachments in the truck bed and a shell but these are things I really didn't want to do so I kept looking. Finally I found an F250 regular cab, 6.2L gas, 4x2 that was just under 6,000 lbs. It would pull the 8,800 lbs trailer my wife wanted and could be registered as a passenger vehicle. Now we're both happy.

So beyond the higher cost of registration check into whether or not there are restrictions on where you can drive the truck that might be a problem for you.

As far as I know there are no restrictions like that here. My registration will be $313/year, which is a lot, but my truck will not have to be registered as a commercial vehicle. Pennsylvania is a funny state - booze laws are draconian but just about everything else is legal

Welp, I pulled the trigger this afternoon. Trading my gorgeous red 5.0 f150 on a 6.2 silver f350 that's as big as a school bus. Going from a 6' bed supercab to a crew cab with an 8' bed. Guess that settles any question about who gets the garage. My tractor's happy though - he won't be spending another winter outside.

Congrats and enjoy. You will love the new Super Duty.

250/350?

I made the mistake only once by buying a TV that was "adequate" once! I dont care about taxes or fees! Had a 2013 Silverado towing a 30ft Apex! Towed fine had to put tranny cooler on but it couldn't stop for "dirty word"!!! I bought a Ram 3500. Now own a 2018 Pinnacle 36FBTS. Had it deleted and a tune and average 11 to 12 MPG. AND IT CAN STOP ON A DIME WITHOUT LOCKING UP THE TIRES! I buy for safety! Nuff said!

Diesels sell quicker and retain more value than a comparable gas engine truck. The 4.30 can be ordered through Ford but I don't think it's necessary to do what you want. Unless you're buying a 42ft. 15K pound 5'er with 6 slides. Mileage will suffer like a bad dog with 4.30's. My 6.7 with 3.55's got 11.8 mpg on my last trip weighted down with over 5 tons of trailer and cargo.

I have your VIN info. If you like, I can fax it to you. Just PM me or tell me what you need to know about it.
I have a 2015 F350 Superduty Lariat DRW with high capacity towing with 4.30 gears. I get mpg city about 14 and 17 Highway. Towing I get between 10 and 12 mpg pulling a 17k 5’ver. The biggest plus for having 4.30 gears is that the dually feels as nimble as a half ton pickup. During towing, the truck never feels like it is struggling with the weight behind it. Lastly, the transmission has no problem shifting into overdrive and rarely downshifts climbing hills. The 2010 F250 Lariat SRW 3.55 gears that I had prior to this 2015 dually had no problem with an 11k travel trailer but it was not meant to be with a 17k 5’ver.
My brother is purchasing an 11k travel trailer he plans to pull with a 2011 F150 that has 6.2 gas. It will handle it but I predict he will eventually upgrade to an F250 Superduty. You just can’t beat the power of the 6.7 Ford diesel.

Go with 350

I had a 150 3.5 ecoboost and looked and drove both short and long wheel base 250’s and 350’s all diesel. I have a 5k pound trailer which the 150 pulled fine even in hills of Montana where I live. Issue was wind which would really move the 150. I went 350 long wheel base and when an18 wheeler goes by any direction I feel nothing. Wind nothing. Long uphill pulls nothing. 7+% down hills for miles nothing. Bottom line I can pull any trailer I want at the speed limit without drama in any weather in the 350. Can’t say that about the 150.

So why a 350 vs 250? 5% or less pric difference to assure even if I upgrade trailers I can do anything. With the price difference so low there was no reason to go half way with a 250

I was shopping for 250 or 350. I ended up getting a new 350 6.7 diesel SW. LOVE IT. We had a small 5th wheel at the time. This year we bought a 325 which is about 39 or 40 feet... a 250 wouldn't of been a good truck for it so I highly recommend the 1 ton then you have more trailers upgrade to in the future without having to get a new truck. Also I live in the mountains, gas engines while they can pull...
It's not fun pulling heavy with a gas engine. Diesel is way better choice.

LOL, I had to do some pretty extreme modifications to my garage header, back wall to get my F-250 Crew short bed in there but I was determined and now it fits with 1.5'' to spare.

Wanted to wait until I rode around in the 350 for a while before posting again.

I ended up with a long bed crew cab, silver (hi ho!), and so far I love the truck. We have a relatively light camper and I know what you mean by not knowing the trailer is back there. Except, you know, when I look in the rearview mirror. I live in the Appalachians and I do downshift before starting up any big hills so as to maintain my speed. With no trailer - well anyone who says the 350 is not rough riding must be used to a buckboard. I have the snow plow package, so the front end is stiffer, but I know I'll need a kidney transplant every 10,000 miles or so.

Right now we're in a hotel in Mystic - daughter is in a marine biology camp all week - and the Ford is in the way-back parking lot because it won't fit anywhere else. Small price to pay though. Beautiful truck.
