Our new to us truck has a hard tonneau cover. I debated the spray in liner or not, but decided to go with the bed rug. it's been to cold to install so the jury is still out on the fit, but it was the best for my use.

It's for lining the bed.

I had a pickup for 12 years with no bedliner.
What did the bed look like at the end of twelve years?

It's a truck bed. Isn't it supposed be used, and get scratched and dirty?
You may be right, but for what trucks sell for these days, most owners take greater care. Also, keeping up the bed appearance yields a higher resale value.

As A32319 stated. "You can dump a bucket full of rocks or live oak firewood over the side and they bounce, not dent. Gravel shovels out easier. Heavy things slide in and out much easier."

After all the above and more, the bed can be hosed down and you're ready to go out on the town.
