Best Hitch Lock

Hello,

We are picking up our Jay Feather in two weeks. What hitch lock do you recommend for the trailer? I've seen a lot of videos on youtube and they all seem bad!

thanks in advance

Don't watch or read anything about the locks on your home either. They are all bad too. As the saying goes, locks are for keeping honest people honest. If they want it, they will get it. Simple as that.

However, locks are a deterrent. In the area I live there have been a rash of thefts from cars parked in driveways. Guess which cars? Yes, the unlocked ones. Thieves do as little work as they have to so they will avoid even the most simple of locks if there is an easier target.

Our trailer is next to our attached garage. All I have on it is a padlock with a long shank on the tongue. Then again my dad's trailer is parked in front of it, and one of our trucks in front of that.

All I have here is a lock that goes through the lever on the tongue. And about half the time there is a car parked in front of the trailer as well

There's some $200 hitch locks out there, but NO LOCK will deep a determined person from doing what he wants to do.

The best deal is to get some real good insurance on the RV.

Very True! We didn't lose a RV but a really sweet two year old car hauler. Had a lock on the tongue............... found it on the ground where the trailer had been. Police came out, did the the best they could with what evidence left behind.
Thanks to Country Companies here in Illinois we had a check for replacement price within ten days. They were the best in a bad situation.
Guess where I have ALL my insurance now

I use a Gorilla brand couple lock available at wally world/auto part stores. Similar to a padlock but has a longer shoulder on one side to protect or hide the shank that goes thru the coupler lever hole more than a regular padlock. <$10 IIRC. No, it won't stop a 18v grinder but most locks won't either, it's more of a piece of mind, the bad guys will have to put forth some effort to get my trailer.

I use 'em on the boat/utility/TT couplers when attached to PU. I leave one on my utility trailer as it sits behind the shed, and the boat is stored in the shed (no lock when in the shed) but the shed is only locked when I'm out of town for extended periods.

How about a link to that lock so we can see what you use.

I use a round lock, but a battery grinder would cut it off in 10 seconds.

My last two trailers I wish were stolen. Now I use one so they can’t quickly steal my hitch tire carrier and bike rack.

Does this lock fit a Jayco tongue? They are very wide compared to other hitches

I have gone the full on expensive route with the Proven Industries hitch lock. As others have said it will not stop someone who really wants it. I also have the BAL pad locks on the x chocks so I would be a big pain in the arse to nick. I work on the thinking I don't need to be the most secure or theft proof trailer I just need to be more hassle then other trailers to half inch.

I used one made by Master Lock on my utility trailer and my son uses it on his TT. It is easy to attach and take off. I really like it and like others have said it is only a deterent. We also use a shackle lock through the ball lock.

I agree with the person that locks are just a deterrent. I just use a hitch ball with the bolt sawed off.
