Breakaway cable
I am unable to find a suitable location to attach my breakaway cable. I have an Andersen Ultimate hitch on a 2016 Ram dually. I am told not to attach the cable to the hitch. Would attaching it to one of the pucks work? I prefer attaching the cable as close to the center of the bed as possible. No attachment points. I had considered drilling a hole in the frame of the hitch, but thought otherwise as it might compromise the integrity of the hitch..Thoughts??

I don't know why a person wouldn't want to connect the brake cable to the hitch. I have a carabiner on mine, that I use. It's right up by where I put the padlock through to lock the release pull arm, so it doesn't get missed.
I suppose if the hitch ever came out of the truck the brakes may not get activated.

You could make the break away cable longer, by extending it. That cable is so light weight it's pretty easy to secure it so it doesn't drag on the ground, even after adding a foot or more length. I've used those tiny bungee cords to keep the break away cable from dragging.
You could also JB Weld a worthy sized bracket onto your truck, would definitely be strong enough.

I use a carabiner to attach to one of the rear tie-down points of the truck. No, it's not centered, but I look at it this way - if I'm ever in a situation where the breakaway cable is required, it's most likely going to pull no matter where it's attached. I don't attach it to the hitch as if you have a problem with the hitch the brakes won't activate.

Now you got me thinking. I have always attached mine to the hitch. It is connected to the bed by 4 separate points. I have never heard of all of them letting go at the same time.
I can see it if it's a one point anchor like the Anderson.
I am going to continue doing it the way I always have with the DrawTite/ Reese hitch.

I put the question to Andersen Customer Service. Am awaiting their response. Meantime I will anchor it to one of the outboard pucks.

Received a response from Andersen Hitches today. Andersen recommends attaching breakaway cable to either the chain pucks or wrapping the cable around one of the diagonal hitch posts. I like the pucks better.
