I don't like the beat up look of it, but it sounds like it's working. I still think someone who didn't know what they were doing abused it, but that's cosmetic. Maybe you could get the dealer to touch it up with some black Rustoleum or other appropriate paint.
Just remember the steps you used with the service guy so you can do it the next time!

Yes, I don't like the idea of welding and cutting either. Whenever it's not 15 degrees out, I'll spend a lot more time working with it. Thanks for the tips.
